Slugs come from the countryside to London in heads of lettuce discarded at a fruit and vegetable market, get eaten by a tramp, breed, and get loose in the city sewers.  Not only do they eat people but their slime causes psychotic behavior in people who then eventually end up gestating more slugs.<br><br>Multiple gory descriptions of slugs attacking in more ways then you would want to imagine.  367 pages but a fast read... ]]></description>

It will probably be my last Wolfe as well.  The attraction of the book/s appears to be Wolfe and his legman Archie Goodwin---who are fun---and the author's use of accurate Manhattan geography and thereabouts. DOUGHTY DEAD: Author of 1,200 Detective Stories and creator of Nick Carter. <br><br>He died in New Jersey but his funeral was held in the Church of the New Jerusalem, Brooklyn--which implies that he may be buried in that borough(Jewish? Catholic?? Protestant??)  Interestingly enough there is a street in Brooklyn--Doughty Street--- named after his father. ]]></description>
