The article says they're available on videotape from the Agrasnches Film Archives but the website it mentions, www.agrasfilms.com, doesn't seem to be up and running. Is it possible to obtain these films anywhere (preferably DVD's or DVD-R's but videotape would do if that's the only option)? Are they available with English subtitles?

Posts: 485 (03/25/04 10:19:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	It would help if you named titles.By the way,the bulk of films dealing in horror/science fiction themes comes from the fifties,as in the thirties there were VERY FEW films that could be considered horror.The movie productions were usually reserved for "A" type films. Rhodes' chapter in the "Fear Without Frontiers" book there were 12 movies, making Mexico the most productive horror nation outside of USA during this decade). Some examples of the titles are LA LLORONA (1933), EL FANTASMA DEL CONVENTO (1934), DOS MONJES (1934) and EL BAL MACABRO (1936). The link you provided lists a movie called LA LLORONA - is this the one from 1933 or a later version?

It is a leter version,starring Mauricio Garces and Carlos Lopez Moctezuma. I'll admit that the films you mentioned are films made in the decade of the 30's.but it wasn't until the fifties and sixties when Mexico really poured out the films.Some may argue that these films were cheaply done,but that didn't stop them from being profitable at the box office.

One is similar to the later version (a mestiza woman is scorned by her Spanish lover and kills their children); the other has to do with Hernan Cortes and his Indian mistress, La Malinche. The whole movie is structured as a sort of murder mystery. I haven't read "Fear Without Frontiers" yet (and am anxiously awaiting the Midnight Marquee book) but the number of "fantasy" films made in Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s will really vary depending upon your definition of fantasy. If you include old-house mysteries and comedies with fantastic elements, there are more in the '40s than one would expect. On the other hand, a movie like "Los muertos hablan" from 1935 is only borderline fantasy.

Posts: 485 (03/30/04 10:58:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	At that time there was really little desire to do these types of films.Film stock wasn't as affordable then,so film projects were mainly reserved for "A" type "mainstream" films.Some films,like MACARIO,would have a character like the Devil,but he would appear as a normal human and the film would be a talky drama.It wasn't until the fifties when things became more affordable and people began recycling sets and props that Mexico became a force in these films.Some would complain the films became campier,cheeper and cheesier,while others could argue they became more colorful,and memorable.

Posts: 485 (03/31/04 10:18:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I agree MACARIO is an excellent drama,but I still prefer the stuff that came out in the fifties and sixties since I feel more entertained by those films.The two VAMPIRO outings are excellent masterpieces,considering the budget wasn't close to anything UNIVERSAL offered.

Posts: 2738 (04/29/08 08:46:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I just watched the first LA LLORONA (1933) last week and was a bit disappointed as the film primarily revolves around telling the tale of how the Llorana came to be as mentioned above by Dr. Ling describes two of the most popular versions of the Llorona story the first one being about the mestiza woman (half-European and half-Indigenous) scorned by her Spanish lover and second one of Hernan Cortes and his Indian mistress, La Malinche. The ending is creepy and it has that 1930's old dark house feel but I think I need to watch this movie at a later time as I definitely found myself trying to compare it to the more enjoyable 1960 version by Rene Cardona that Casa Negra released in a beautiful restored DVD while I watched the 1933 movie as a grainy beat up 75 year old film courtesy of a DVD-R.
