I could be a millionaire if I sold my out-of-print VHS titles at the prices on Mid Vid's website. Just on the homepage alone, I would get over $700 (I have EL INQUISIDOR, DEVIL'S FEMALE, THE PROWLER, and FEAST FOR THE DEVIL). I also have SATANICO PANDEMONIUM, but it's a different label, so maybe it's not worth $125. I just realized if you refresh the page, you get a whole new set of titles. The second time, I didn't have anything (it looked to be mostly Japanese tapes).

Posts: 3382 (04/26/08 19:27:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Secure web carts are affordable and easy to program, you could even just use PayPal's invoicing tools, get yourself some hosting space, find some web templates for a vendor site, scan some covers and set up a shop over the course of a long weekend if one is so inclined. It's also quite appropriate to point out that there are dozens of marketplace sellers on Amazon.com who routinely list vintage used pre-records of just everyday stuff for $100+, and don't get me started on how much vintage Japanese horror tapes go for at auction on a good day. Just yesterday Spiralheadcase on eBay sold some sort of Mondo Africa pre-record for $160, and I unexpectedly won a tape of WILD WILD PLANET for a paltry $38 with a max bid entered of $45. The last time I tried to nail one of those from him the closing price was $92, and I had given up at $75. So I am startled to have won it and have already been informed that I am crazy for having paid $50 for a grubby old video of a movie I already have, but I know that the quality will be impeccable: Spiral doesn't f4ck around. So Bill's prices aren't unprecedented. And while I think it's OK to be a little cynical about it, the circumstances of him opening up his collection for public sale are unique. I can't and won't presume to speak for him but Bill also isn't interested in selling off a collection compiled over say 30 years of really hard to find pressings to a bunch of yokels for peanuts. He also must be very aware that the chances are quite likely that those people who decide to spring for his tapes are doing so to get source material for their own little shady business venture. If that's the case than $150 for the right tape isn't outrageous at all since they would make their "investment" back after selling their 10th DVD-R burn. Serious nutcase collectors also won't care how much they have to pay for that special title without having to waste time farting around on eBay or searching endlessly with Google and taking a chance on getting something in shoddy condition. So yeah, some of his prices are genuinely humorous but I wouldn't go around feeling sorry for the people who pay what he asks, they will be able to afford it.

Indeed. The value of "collectibles" is rather subjective. Of course a lot depends on how willing a person is to part with their collectible, and how much the person interested in said collectible really wants it.
