I'm picking 'what have you done to Solange'..... because it's got it all, murder, vaginal stabbings, abortion, a pervert peeping on school girls in the shower, a twist ending that actually makes sense.....what else does a movie need?

the first one to spring to mind is Strip Nude For Your Killer.
it's great stuff-good music, Edwidge, black gloved killers, and a fat guy with a blow-up doll. but, my all time fave is Martino's Strange Vice Of Signora Wardh. i first saw it via Saturn video's VHS-by far the worst looking VHS, legit or not, i've ever seen. it's got miles of atmosphere, a convoluted plot, a neat ice cube trick, Edwidge, George Hilton AND Ivan Rassimov! |

I love STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER too, but my favourite giallo is BLOOD AND BLACK LACE because of its nastiness and luxurious visual reproduction of the old
paperback covers - even more impressive when you think of the budget.
THE CASE OF THE BLOODY IRIS comes a close second, however: the archetypal '70s giallo as far as I'm concerned!

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave; I like the yellow gardening gloves the killer wears and Anthony Steffen is Anthony Steffen.

I like my gialli with a little gothic flavoring so when you add these two it's hard to beat Miraglia. I'll go with THE RED QUEEN KILLS SEVEN TIMES
followed up closely in second place with Squonk's pick THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE.
Both have fantastic gothic atmosphere and I love the inside of the castle in both films. RED QUEEN has a great killer decked out complete with red cape and I really enjoy that surrealistic dream (Red Queen coming down the hall-knife in hand!). RED QUEEN is like a horror comic book giallo! And as for EVELYN, it has one of the most fantastic openings I have ever seen in a giallo, immediately drawing in the viewer right off the bat and the conclusion easily ranks with the best in the giallo sub genre. Hell, I may have to go with EVELYN first, RED QUEEN second-ha ha. I guess I'll settle with a tie.

Although I think the use of the term giallo in this context is silly and should be avoided, I do know what you mean. I think THE CASE OF THE BLOODY
IRIS is a particularly entertaining film. Umberto Lenzi's films with Carroll Baker ORGASMO, PARANOIA, KNIFE OF ICE, and SO SWEET . . . SO PERVERSE), are
great, as is SPASMO. I also enjoy all of Sergio Martino's thrillers, in particular ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK and TORSO.

THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, the first giallo I saw, stylish and scintilating with a semial Morricone score. TENEBRE has everything: style (again!),
music, a couple of unexpected shocks at the end, and an intense Tony Franciosa. That scene at night with the traveling camera outside, then inside the house,
accompanied by Goblin's pulsating music, has to be one of the coolest moods of advancing death presented in film. Other gialli: A few with Fenech, like
MRS. WARDH, are also standouts, but if I had only a couple to choose from in my giallo home, I'd be the Argentos.

My favorite, bar none, is "Blood and Black Lace." Everything works for me - the actors, the colors, the music (I LOVE the music), everything. Any
film with Cameron Mitchell, Eva Bartok AND Harriet White does it for me.

My absolute favorite would have to be PROFONDO ROSSO, which was one of the first ones I ever saw. I love the Goblin music, the splashy gore and the all
around mood of the film. My other favorites would be TENEBRE and BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, but PROFONDO ROSSO is tops for me.

BLOOD AND BLACK LACE all the way! As Eurotika said...great musical score, magnificent directing, hell just beautiful to look at.
How about SUSPIRIA...arguably(sp?) giallo. |
