I found on internet an interesting compare of Mario Baba,s Whip and the body between the old VCI and the new this week released german EMS version who had much better picture quality and is anamorphic also.

In general the new disc would seem to have mostly advantages, but I'm sorry to see that the color gel lighting effects seem to burn with lesser intensity. I look forward to testing it on my own home system.

What an absolutely marvelous DVD of one of Bava's best films! I watched this edition for the first time this evening and was enchanted by the marvelous picture quality, very sharp anamorphic image, the vivid colors and superb packaging. It was fascinating to be able to switch between three different audio tracks: english, german and the original italian. Mr. Lucas's commentary was extremely interesting and informative. The extras contain a few curiosities (particularly the ridiculous American opening credit sequence). I appreciate the effort that went into compiling this material.
This is one of the absolute best Bava releases on DVD and I HIGHLY recommend it. The only very minor quibble I have about this fabulous disc is that it did not contain english subtitles (only german). There are some rather substantial differences between the english and italian soundtracks. The dubbing on the italian is (to this non-italian speaking listener) far superior to the english version (Christopher Lee is dubbed by another actor in the english version, as well as the italian). Most importantly, the italian version is considerably more atmospheric. The winds howl continuously and very loudly in the italian version, adding a great deal to the gothic sense of dread and mystery. In the english version, the howling winds are either absent in many scenes or reduced to a whimper, accentuating the mediocre english dubbing. I highly recommend watching the film with the italian soundtrack, despite the lack of english subs. An essential Bava purchase. Thanks Mr. Lucas for your contributions to this and other Bava projects! |

A new comparison between the EMS dvd and the VCI. Already aware of the superior EMS dvd, but thought I'd post this for the heck of it. Ben |
