Here's another movie I'm curious about.
I saw the trailer on the new DVD~ A CANDLE FOR THE DEVIL. The quality of the picture looked horrible but there is a Redemption DVD out as well.
Is this film any good?

No-one has an opinion on this film?

I have never seen it. I do not have access to the book right now, but if I remember correctly Jonathan Rigby in his ENGLISH GOTHIC did not think highly of it.
Not that his opinion should necessarily be considered important.

I saw this on tape as ESTATE OF INSANITY. It was merely okay. It was produced by Compton-Tekli (one of these was Tony Tenser's company before Tigon) who
had arthouse hits with REPULSION and CUL-DE-SAC but this one isn't that great. Its certainly no Tigon production. It has nice cinematography by Peter
Newbrook (who did second unit on LAWRENCE OF ARABIA) and a nice main theme score by Robert Richards but the script (by Donald and Derek Ford who wrote a couple
of other Compton-Tekli films as well as CORRUPTION and one of them wrote DON'T OPEN FOR CHRISTMAS) is your usual lord of the manor marries second wife
returns to home haunted by ghost of first wife people suspect him of being a local rapist killer "logical explanation" ending. Heather Sears is an
unmemorable damsel in distress. John Turner does a lot of shouting. Francis De Wolff is his usual gruff self.
It's a nice diversion but nothing special. Give it a rental.

If the British DVD is no longer available, you can try to get the French one. The title is "Le spectre maudit", but the box also wears the British
title. Soundtracks are in English, French (2.0 each). Optional subs: French. Ratio: 1.66. Running time: 82 mns (PAL). The video publisher is NEO PUBLISHING.
Their DVDs are among the best in France; they released the Bavas, Fulcis, "Mill of the Stone Women", the Lenzis, among others.

There's a US DVD from Redemption USA but its likely a port of the British disc though I haven't bothered to look. I remember the fullscreen tape being cropped.

There is a problem in several titles released in Great-Britain by Odeon, in their "Best of British" collection for instance. It was mentioned in a
British forum, so I verified the three DVDs of Tod Slaughter movies I bought from them, and I found the same irritating defect in "Maria Marten, or The
Murder in the Red Barn" (see screen caps below). I wrote to them, asking if they could replace the disc - but apparently the same defect appears in all of
them, and in other titles as well. In fact, although my first mail to them mentioned the precise details about this DVD, not only the title, but the name of
the collection, the serial number, etc. they first answered arguing that this DVD "wasn't one of their products" !!! it's only when I sent
them the capture of the box's illustration that they releuctantly admitted it was from their company. But they didn't offer any solution to the
problem.

I tried to sit through this one last year. Never did make it. May try again if I'm in such a whimsy again.

Here's a screenshot comparison, I know they are too small but since I don't have the French disc I've borrowed them from the review.

I rented it through netflix about a year ago. I didn't really think too much of it. It was ok, the ending was a bit of a let down for me as well. I
personally wouldn't worry about seeking this one out. But it isn't a HORRIBLE film, i mean, i've seen worse in the genre. The quality of the dvd I saw was not very good. Bad color and I think full screen. |

German DVD coming in the middle of September:
|
|||
The Real Belfagor |
|||
|
With the original UK artwork.
The Redemption and Odeon discs are about equal in terms of colour/picture quality and seem to be from the same master as the Vampix/Videomedia VHS from 1981. The French dvd does look like an improvement and I'm very curious to see what the German release will be like. I first saw this on TV when I was a kid in the early '70s. We now know it made as an imitation of Italian imitations of British horror movies (bear with me), but it's a little too typically staid to compete with the Dr. Hichcock movies, for example. Still, the scene with the white ghost on a black horse, galloping through grey woods crying "Murderer!" has always stuck in my mind. |

I bought this film on 16mm last year, and have only managed to sit through it once. It's not a horrible movie, just not a really interesting one.
I'm sure the faded Eastmancolor print didn't help, though. The problem with this one is that you can very easilly figure out the whole "insane
twin brother in the attic" plot about 10 minutes into the movie, which leaves you to sit for another 70 waiting for dumb Heather Sears to figure it out,
too.
