Seems like an ideal Subversive Cinema release alongside WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA and SEEDS OF EVIL. Are they still producing discs?

I don't know for the two movies mentioned above, but GLI AMANTI D'OLTRETOMBA (Nightmare Castle) is certainly not a PD movie - especially if this release is the uncut Italian version. |

This looks amazingly good. Severin has been doing alot of 80's Franco ( which I try to enjoy but really cannot get into ) and I end up renting.
This one I can pre order with confidence.....I will adore this release. What a beautiful cover image! |

I really love this movie, but I can't agree with that cover blurb about it being "as good, if not better than any Mario Bava Gothic tale!"
I'm sure this is going to be a definitive release and I'm thrilled, but they're making it sound as if the negative's just been dug up like some buried treasure. It's not as if the original version was difficult to locate or anything: Surf Film have owned the rights to it for years. Redemption/Salvation released a nice VHS in the UK in the late '90s - under the original English export title THE NIGHT OF THE DOOMED - and it was out on VHS here it Italy a few years ago.

Perhaps after this lovely release Severin could give us an HD mastered THE GHOST! One can wish, can't he? Btw, gorgeous eye-catching cover above--beautiful
colors! I'm super-stoked about the release as it's always been a big fave of mine.
You go Severin! |

Tim Lucas raises some valid points regarding this release and it's chosen title for DVD over at his blog.
http://www.videowatchdog.blogspot.com/ My preferred VHS for this is titled NIGHT OF THE DOOMED, and I agree that should be the title. Still, NIGHTMARE CASTLE is such a familiar title that I can see why Severin chose it ( even it it does belong to the hacked down English dubbed US release ). It's a more fitting moniker than either FACELESS MONSTER or NIGHT OF THE DOOMED too I think. Mostly I am just thrilled Severin is bring this one out, after the $$ beating Synapse took on CASTLE OF BLOOD, this is a ballsy move and I applaud their effort. |

There are two circumstances opposing each other: 1) Most horror fans know this film as NIGHTMARE CASTLE, so hearing that a definitive version is coming out
pumps them up to get it, possibly, and 2) retailers won't be that enthusiastic about carrying this because they have the title in their database a million
times over. Severin is probably just going for the horror fans who will be buying online.
One could also go with the title, LOVERS (FROM) BEYOND THE GRAVE, a translation of the original Italian. And, yes, it will be interesting to see if this sells, in light of what happened with Synapse and CASTLE OF BLOOD. Mirek |

They could title this BUKKAKE BABS and i'll still buy it! (no offence Babs...I love ya)
About the Bava quote on the box~at least it doesn't say "Bava Film"

The original review from Monsters at Play is here:
http://www.monstersatplay.com/review/dvd/f/facelessmonster.php The quote on the cover--"As good--if not better--than any Mario Bava Gothic tale"--has been reworked from the original: "The Faceless Monster is as good, if not better than any gothic telling the maestro had come up with himself (did I just say that?)." [BTW, Tim mentions that the cover quote is grammatically incorrect. Can anyone spot why this is so?] Severin could have picked up another quote from the review: "A true horror fan's cinematic wet dream!" Mirek |

The awesome release could be made even better with the addition of a Barbara Steele commentary. I wonder if she was asked. I'll call her tonight and find
out.
I would personally prefer it to be titled "Night of the Doomed" or "Lovers Beyond the Tomb." Or in a perfect world, title it with its Mexican release title "Orgasmo", which I know might confuse it with an Umberto Lenzi film, but I love the line - Barbara Steele in Orgasmo!!! |

Latarnia wrote: It's grammatically incorrect because you should be able to pull out the interjected comment "if not better" and still have a sentence that is correct. But when you do pull out "if not better" you're left with "As good than any Mario Bava gothic tale." So, to be grammatically correct, I think it should be "As good--if not better--as any Mario Bava gothic tale." |

I'll go with the "Mario Bava gothic tale" part. I would edit it to say "As good as any of Mario Bava's gothic tales, if not
better."

It could have been worse. It could have said "As good--if not better--than any Mario Fava Gothic tale". ; )
