The MOC version sounds pretty good. I'm thinking of preordering it from Amazon.co.uk. They have it on sale, and with shipping it only comes to about $30.00
US.

You know I think the MOC version looks a bit more richer but we will have to see it side by side with the Criterion.

I picked up the Criterion 2-disc edition of "Vampyr" last night. Haven't watched the discs yet, but the packaging is superb. Very attractive
design utilising images from the film. Comes in a sturdy case encompassing the discs, a handsome booklet featuring several essays and excerpts from
interviews, as well as a fat booklet reproducing the original screenplay, as well as J. S. Le Fanu's "Carmilla," on which the story was
marginally based. As a long time fan of Dreyer and of "Vampyr" (I purchased my first VHS copy in 1981-2 from a private collector who advertised in
"Starlog" magazine) and one who has collected half a dozen different copies, I am thrilled to own what is perhaps the definitive version (and
package) for this film).

It's certainly an intriguing film and whatnot, but I haven't made it thru from beginning to end yet without falling asleep. Wouldn't mind giving it
another shot, but am not willing to dump the $ on it right now, if ever. Shall see if the Chicago library system gets a copy in circ soon.

Criterions don't always have the best picture quality, I have their JULIET OF THE SPIRITS and the UK edition has much more natural colours and it costs
half the price.
I consider MOC to be the Criterion (for quality) of the UK so I'm waiting for DVDBeaver to do some comparisons before I choose. The waiting is killing me though. |

MOC has kicked Criterion's butt on several occasions. I much prefer the MOC disc of ONIBABA over the Criterion one. Also, I feel the same way about the two
KWAIDAN discs matched up against each other.

That MoC "Kwaidan" disc is a real treasure. The film itself is about 20-25 minutes longer than the Criterion and comes with a fat booklet containing
the original Lafcadio Hearn stories on which the film is based. It's an essential purchase, IMO. But to be fair to Criterion, their disc came out when
the longer cut was evidentally not available. And Criterion has produced many wonderful sets. MoC raised the bar a little higher, and I think that Criterion
has met the challenge by raising their own already high standards in recent years.

The Criterion edition of "Corridors of Blood" is inferior to the British DVD released by DD Entertainment. Both are cut, unfortunately, but the DD
edition is more complete. The Criterion is full screen and the DD is widescreen.

True, todmichel, about CORRIDORS OF BLOOD. Except the Criterion dvd is full screen because it isn't cropped -- the DD is cropped for widescreen. If you
play the Criterion ed with VLC Player on your pc, you can crop it down.

Well both the Criterion and MoC caps are up at DVDBeaver and I'm having a tough time deciding which one to get.
The Moc has a bit more info, but the C has been cleaned of specks and scrapes. |
