Collecting Cult films, why? |
Lead | |
|
I was just thinking to myself, why do I have this obsession about cult films? Mostly horror and gialli. Looking at my dvd's and vhs, it becomes clear that
I have triple the number of all my other movies of various genres. Yet, it is certainly true that the quality of the majority of these are nowhere near as good
as the mainstream films. Why do I keep popping them in the player instead of the 'great movies' I have also collected? I'm thinking it all comes
down to the search. The fact that these cult films were hidden away, cut to shreds and in other ways deemed not worthy of being seen. When dvd came out, I
really got with it as Anchor Bay and Image began releasing the Fulcis and Argentos that were so illusive before. Now, the pool of missing films is shrinking
and the distributors as well. This seems to fuel more determination. Maybe I'm just obsessed? I guess I'm wondering if I should take a breath and slow
down. Guilt, maybe. What do you think?

I know exactly what you're saying, Uncle.
I'm on a quest to find the most obscure and bizarre horror films I can find. I've watched so many cheesy 70's films that my nightmares, when they come, are looking like cheesy 70's schlock (I kid you not) My nightmares actually have that washed out 70's film look. I have Fellini's CASANOVA dvd to open and watch but tonight I think i'll watch MIGHTY PEKING MAN. |

i think it's interesting that our geeky community has to justify itself.
i watch movies that i like. i tend to like more obscure/gross/sleazy/whatever junk more than mainstream/hollywood stuff. so, obviously i collect and watch the former more than the latter on my shelves you will see Grapes Of Wrath next to Wizard of Gore*. i like films with passion and films that try to do something new...or at least stick to a good formula. i find "underground" films of today just as uninteresting as the mainstream, and i'm sometimes impressed with mainstream movies *as you can see my dvd shelves have no rhyme or reason... yet i can always find exactly what i'm looking for |

Watching a very nice and sweetly erotic version of Lady Chatterly right now on the Sundance Channel. Full of environmental ambience and lots of soft moaning. A
French production by the way. I bounce between horror, silly American comedies like Deuce Bigelow to high brow art house stuff like The Cook The Thief His Wife
and Her Lover. You'd find it all in my collection. However, 97 percent of this collection is Naschy, Universal Horror, Italian horror, Spanish horror and
of course those wonderful Asian prodyucts. Not too impressed myself with much of the latest low budget genre stuff. Definitely impressed with a lot of the
newer French genre releases though. I feel no reason to validate my film passions. I collect what strikes my fancy. Even Will Ferrell.

Like the lyrics of that old Cramps song go "I don't know about art,but I know what I like".

It keeps most "normal" people from looking at my shelves and asking to borrow a film they have no intention of returning.

I sold off about a third of my DVD collection to pay for the movie [back to shooting in one week!] and damn, did it nearly kill me. I realized that, with
Netflix, i can watch just about whatever i want anyway.
Having hundreds of obscure horror and kungfu movies on the wall was simply vanity.....just me showing off what a refined odd-ball i am to anyone who might come by for a visit...... not that there's anything wrong with that. |

I recently got rid of a couple dozen dvd's that I just didn't really like that much, and instantly regretted it. I even gave away 'Versus'. Why
would I do that?

man I once pawned my entire collection of DVDs to make a truck payment. Probably about 400 of them. It hurt worse than a kidney stone! That was about 7 years
ago and I have since replenished myself.

I don't like collecting anymore. I want a TV service that allows me to just watch whatever I want, without having to own the physical media.

I like collecting DVDs. But recently I feel like I've about exhausted it, and have so many movies now, many many I have not even watched, that I've
lost alot of my passion for collecting them, especially now that I have about all the great ones there are. Now I am collecting international dry snuff tobacco
items, and that's a massive thing too.

Yeah i feel a bit exhausted too with the collecting. The titles that I really really really want are still not out there. Especially all the titles missing
from my Paul Naschy collection! Perhaps this is why politics has become a much more popular fixation here on the board than horror films?

I love all things Naschy. Except Crimson, which I thought was a complete waste.

good to know, Uncle Fred. I can take or leave Crimson too, but I do have it in my collection.

It's still the hunt that interests me but I have turned from dvd back to vhs. Mostly titles on Wizard Video, Thriller, Unicorn and Gorgon. I love the big
boxes and the lurid artwork. Im not too worried if the film is cut I just love the artwork.

I'll agree that the art work is beautiful on the vhs stuff, but I just can't handle the blurry picture anymore. Either I am spoiled or going blind.

I'm with you there, Hombre.
It's great to see the old vhs covers but I'll never watch my FISTFULL OF DOLLARS pan and scan vhs again. |
