Years later I finally picked up an old MPI vhs release of House of Exorcism, the U.S. version of Lisa And The Devil. HOLY COW!! What a mish mash of stuff this film is! I knew that the U.S. version had scenes of Elke Sommer diong her best Linda Blair impersonation and also scenes with Robert Alda as a priest but I didnt realize that the U.S. producers were going to try and tell two different stories at one time! Lisa And The Devil is a beautiful film. A little confusing at times but still a very surreal and beautiful film. I'm just not sure what the hell the producers were thinking when they decided to throw in a devil possession story and use Lisa And The Devil as basically flashback material to tell some type of story of who is possessing Sommers body? It still confounds me!! I will give it to the producers that they did one hell of a job matching locations and clothing to make it work in the early parts of the film that are set in Spain. Does anyone know if they reshot scenes in the exact location or not? The U.S. version is still enjoyable in my opinion but it might be because I already knew the story line of Lisa And The Devil. Eh......the clamshell looks cool on the shelf so that is a plus!! Here is a scan.

Posts: 872 (04/15/09 05:27:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I don't think the "blame" is the "US Producers", it's Leone, who took Bava's original and "souped it up(the pea variety)" to cash in the Exorcist craze. Thus resulting in 2 "different" films. I have the Image dvds of both.

Posts: 875 (04/15/09 09:51:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Yeah, it's out, and on the new Bava sets, which I haven't gotten, as I have the Image DVDs, which while arn't as "good" they have an appeal and collectability aspect I like. I still need a decent Kill, Baby Kill though.

I haven't compared them with the newer Bava box set versions. The Raro discs are in both english and italian with english subs, plus there is a nice documentary on Lisa and the Devil, which I believe also has english subs. -Ed

Lamborto Bava explains, in the supplements, that the print of "Lisa" is not quite complete as it was a print made for TV - so, for instance, the deaths of Sylva Koscina and Alida Valli are slightly more graphic in the "House" version, just because they weren't shortened in the print. So, in fact, one wonders why the makers of the DVD just didn't add these little snippets to the print of "Lisa", as they in this movie, originally. I have seen the Spanish version and these scenes are intact in it. But, in the other hand, the superb love scene of Sommers, Orano and the corpse in the room was shortened in this Spanish version. However, as all these versions (Lisa, House, and the Spanish ones) are on nice condition, it must be possible to re-construct a complete version of Bava's masterpiece, in retaining all the scenes made fpr LISA and only them.

I read that LISA AND THE DEVIL version was sent to Allied Artists to make their TV version and returned when the company went out of business without the cut scenes restored. I would have thought that Leone would have sent a copy rather than the original but maybe he didn't want to spend any more money on that version.
