Here is the first glimpse of Henry Cavill as Superman.
What do you think?
What's the first thing you notice about the suit?
Superhero costumes are always problematic for me when worn by a living actor. Of course a superhero costume is always more believable on the printed page of a comic or in an animated film. At first glance, I accept this upgrade of Superman's costume. There is more cape than usual, beginning with pleats at the top which apparently spread out for perhaps some functional reason. The S shield is traditional in size and design, which is right, and it stands out in relief, which is a good idea. The letter and outline are red, but the background has been changed from yellow to white, which is fine. A red, white and blue Superman is rightuous. The fabric is mottled in some way, giving the suit a texture that makes it look like something other than fabric and other than a child's pajamas, which is another good idea. I don't see the red shorts, but that could be because of shadowing in the photo. No one complained when Batman's black / blue shorts were eliminated from his costume -- excuse me, I mean armor -- in 1989, and maybe the time has come to eliminate Superman's red shorts. I don't object to eliminating the red shorts, if that's what they've done, providing that the rest of the costume is both traditional and believable for a human being to wear in a live action film.
I do not expect this to be a very good film, but I still hope for the best.
You all know from reading my posts that I'm easy to please and easily entertained.
