I have the film Coming Of Sin on the Pagan label has this film been in anyway edited- I know that there have been different edits released. Also are either Symptoms or Deviation worth getting the latter is said to be similar to Vampyres- is it?

Only in that they are set in England and have some pretty unnerving scenes of violence contrasted with sex. I like DEVIATIONS though it is more of a mind-bender than an outright horror exploitation film. Syblia Grey is awesome, very reminiscent of Annulka from VAMPYRES. Supposedly SYMPTOMS is better than all of them but I have never seen it: I believe www.lfvw.com has a DVD-R of it that is affordable & more or less complete.
COMING OF SIN is I believe the same basic story as BLACK CANDLES, so maybe you got that confused with VAMPYRES?? I also have that Pagan DVD but to my shame have never found the time to watch it. The night is young however ... |

I just got a copy of SYMPTOMS from ETC. It is a British TV broadcast (complete with an instance where it is interrupted by a freeze-frame with the title on a still, a snippet of a commercial, then the freeze-frame again which dissolves into the feature (probably to prevent its use as a video release in the first place). The print looks good, the muddy look is actually appropriate to the hazy, picturesque landscape. Image is not as good as Midnight Video's BLACK CANDLES or DEVIATION (though that is a much scratchier source) but far better than the TV broadcast recording (or time-coded screener) of WHIRLPOOL that is out on DVDR.
The film is rather slow-paced but nicely-so and is in keeping with the feel of Larraz's other British films although we are missing the Italian contributions of editor Carlo Reali and composer Stelvio Cipriani here (both worked on DEVIATION and WHIRLPOOL). The manor house looks rather unatmospheric on the outside (all white and clean) but has the requisite dark, sparsley furnished, firelit interiors. I don't know of other versions available but this one is acceptable. |

BLACK CANDLES was interesting although very disturbing during some scenes. I guess I have to admit it was nice seeing Helga Line getting rather naked.......and doing it nicely.
That goat scene was rather disturbing though. |

On the back of my copy of Coming Of Sin it says the film has unreleased footage included. Apparently other edits of this film also were retitled. As far as Deviation is concerned I have read that this is similiar to Vampyres in that it is set in a mansion style house with people basically being held there. As for the plot of Coming Of Sin it is about a artist who has a gypsy visiting her and when a man arrives on a white horse it causes conflict which leads to tragedy. Black Candles has a woman looking for her sister and she ends up getting involved with a witches coven. I have only seen an edited version of this film and I don't remember it being that good. By the way has anyone noticed the bizarre edit about an hour into Vampyres. It happens when Anulka goes into a room to close the curtains she reaches up and then reaches up again, her actual closing of the curtains seems to be spliced from another take. If Sybilla Kay is as good as Anulka in Deviation then I probably would consider buying it, she is in a film called Monique which was made in 1969 and it's a very good drama Joan Alcorn and David Sumner are excellent in it as well.I have always thought it a shame that Anulka was not given as much screen time as Marianne Morris in Vampyres but Morris had more experience as an actress and that was probably why. Anulka though is certainly a favourite - who would want to leave that house - she's also very good in The Likely Lads.

Re: Jose Larraz | ||

As far as I know all of the scenes featured in the caps above are on the Pagan release. I also remember reading somewhere that the more explicit scenes in the versions of this film titled Sodomia and Violation Of The Bitch were not filmed by Larraz at all - can anyone confirm this? By the way those scenes are not on the Pagan release. From the reviews I've read Vampyres and Coming Of Sin are Larraz at his best and the others are just variations on the same themes.

After checking I have found that the second scene in the caps shown has been edited in the Pagan release, the ''fingering'' scene.

thanks guys for all the patter on Coming of Sin. Never even heard of this one and man I really liked it, with the exception of course of the Naschy Night of the Werewolf cues that are featured throughout. Excellent movie. Erotic as Hell too! Sorry but no nude screen caps from this boy and his photobucket.

Re: Jose Larraz | ||

Both BLACK CANDLES and COMING OF SIN make use of music from the CAM library associated with Paul Naschy. I think the NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF cue that features throughout COMING OF SIN (as well as MUMMY'S REVENGE) is by Stelvio Cipriani but I don't know from what film. As someone else has pointed out, a cue that figures prominently in BLACK CANDLES that is also used in the Naschy film is from Marcello Giombini's score for EERIE MIDNIGHT HORROR SHOW.

Is DEVIATION anywhere as good or sexy as VAMPYRES if it is it would be worth getting. On the subject of VAMPYRES does the UK Anchor Bay release have the interviews that are on the US release? I don't think they are on it - the cover of that release is terrible it's some godawful white made up face with blood coming out of the mouth which has nothing to do with the film.

I like DEVIATION more than VAMPYRES, but I sure would not call it sexy ( despite nudity and sexual situations aplenty ). It's sick and twisted and downbeat, and one up's WHIRLPOOL by a few notches. There are no fantasy or supernatural elements in DEVIATION. VAMPYRES is more like a horny male's vampire fantasy that has never held much interest for me after I saw it once. I understand it's appeal but am not a big fan.

There are reviews of both DEVIATION and COMING OF SIN at CINEMA NOCTURNA. Also there is another edit on the Pagan release of COMING OF SIN, it is 39 minutes in at the start of the rape scene, the earlier review also points this out.

If you want some laughs make sure you check out REST IN PIECES, which has appearences by Jack Taylor, Patty Shepard and Tony Isbert. Some good exploitation in it also, and a haunted garage door which is like, brrr! I also liked his SAVAGE LUST and EDGE OF THE AX, the latter of which also has Jack Taylor and Ms. Shepard, and of course SCREAM AND DIE/HOUSE THAT VANISHED: All are fairly easy to score on prior rental VHS.
He has a thing for people wearing white eggshell masks, I wonder what it relates to. |

Quote: Don't forget the self-rearranging closet. The slutty maid was nice, too. I wonder if Larraz was ripping off LISA AND THE DEVIL with the airplane finale. |

European Trash Cinema has SYMPTOMS. Its a TV broadcast but in quite good condition (far better than whatever all versions of WHIRPOOL were sourced from).
