I finally got around to watching this last night.
A decent Spanish/Italian production with a little twist in the story directed by Jose Luis Merino.
Dr. Ivana Rakowsky (Erna Schurer) travels to the castle of Baron Janos Dalmar (Charles Quiney) to work as his assistant. The Baron is conducting experiments with reanimation (from what I could gather). The castle is regarded as a cursed place by the townspeople who tell the tale of how seven years earlier there was a fire and Igor (the Baron's brother) perished in the fire. Actually he didnt and he prowls the castle and the country side in a bad bad wig killing young girls. Dr. Rakowsky starts having nightmares about being in a torture chamber after drinking her nightly drugged milk......you would think she would have learned from the first time. She sets off to discover the secret of the Baron and also falls in love with him......they actually wed by the final reel.
There is a Lycanthropy connection that tries to throw the viewer off and it kinda did for me until I realized that the monster (Igor) was not a wolf but badly burned. I was kinda dissapointed because I thought cool a werewolf flick! But alas just a red herring from Merino.
It's not a bad flick but not an overly good flick either. It's a bit slow for my tastes but I would definetly watch it again. It's a good rainy day viewer.
The film is shot well. Merino makes good use of the castle scenery. Im sure this might have been more colorful upon initial release but my Wizard Video print is dark and grainy.....but it adds some charm to this little potboiler. There is virtually no gore in this print but plenty of boobage. I like the way Erna Schurer's lower naughty bits are conviently obscured by towels and implents of torture in her nude scenes. I think every main female character in this movie loses thier top.........and Im not complaining. It helped move things along actually.
I still recommend this movie for those nights when you want to watch something a little different. It's also known as "Scream of the Demon Lover" and Im not sure if it has seen a dvd release yet but I could be wrong.
