A German made gothic horror film, from the director and cast of the Karl May Westerns, it stars Christopher Lee as the evil Count Regula with Lex Barker (La Dolce Vita (1960)), and the attractive Karen Dor (You Only Live Twice (1967)) as the heroic leads and is very impressively directed by Harald Reinl (Treasure of Silver Lake (1962)) with some of the best gothic sets and locations ever committed to film. It available on a very good German DVD with English soundtrack and an interesting selection of bonus features. New Mondo-Esoterica review Anyone own or seen this film, care to comment? A painter/artist i showed this to thought that the colors looked better than the Bavas i've been forcing on him. The dvd is outstanding for such an obscure title...a gem in my collection.

The R2 dvd is excellent and if I could make a cd of Euro Horror flicks, the theme song by Peter Thomas would be on it. "Some days its not worth the effort of chewing through the restraints".

Posts: 3486 (12/04/06 19:29:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	One of the most enjoyable movies ever made: Harald Reinl deserves a renaissance of some sorts, I watched a bunch of his Jack London and Karl May westerns over the fall and none of them are boring or uninteresting. But this is probably his finest film from the 1960s, and at the time of release was probably considered a special effects extravaganza ala Peter Jackson. May it never be remade!!!

Well, the US theatrical release title is BLOOD DEMON (or THE BLOOD DEMON). The original double-bill one sheet (paired with MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND), has BLOOD DEMON as the title on the poster. It was reissued theatrically under the title BLOOD OF THE VIRGINS, believe it or not, and there were actually odd-looking, pasted-together, yellow lobby cards made for that release. CASTLE OF THE WALKING DEAD is the film's video release title, and TORTURE CHAMBER OF DOCTOR SADISM is its TV release moniker. You see, television guides had an aversion to using the word "blood," so I guess they felt TORTURE CHAMBER OF DOCTOR SADISM was less gruesome. (How's that for logic?). The UK cinema release was also called THE BLOOD DEMON, so are we to assume that this was the actual export title? Or could the international version have just beEN lumbered with a direct translation from the German, THE SNAKE PIT AND THE PENDULUM? Unfortunately, I don't have a TV title to throw into the mix. Considering that movies like THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH, THE DEVIL CAME FROM AKASAVA and DRACULA - PRISONER OF FRANKENSTEIN all made it onto British TV, it seems odd that - at least as far as I am aware - Reinl's film never did. BTW, the upcoming Italian dvd release is entitled LA 13° VERGINE (THE 13TH VIRGIN).

I remember reading in FAMOUS MONSTERS that a film called THE SNAKE PIT AND THE PENDULUM was forthcoming; for that reason, I assume it was the original export title. I believe BLOOD DEMON was a title concocted by Sam Sherman when he was creating campaigns for Hemisphere Pictures. Read Video WatchBlog at www.videowatchdog.com!
