According to Dark Sky's website, it's going to be 1.33:1, unfortunately.

Nooo noo this is a VERY nice DVD and you should get it. Even if filmed for widescreen it works very well at 1:33 and has gorgeous color, a fabulous music track, some great murder scenes that border on ghoulish cartoons and it's such a good movie THAT EVEN I AM NOW INTO THIS STUFF; This was my first official Edgar Wallace movie and I did not know it was Edgar Wallace until seeing it on the screen, just tossed in the DVD to find out what the hell it was.
In all honesty the first time I watched it I hated the movie. It struck me as smug and smarmy and self consciously hip, but after someone made me think twice I realized that it's just solid German kitsch, using the swagger of James Bond circa 1967 as the template. The gadgets and killing gimmicks are right out of the 007 handbook but with a decidedly Germanic twist in the direction of goth that is very reminiscent of a comic book. SOME of the movie does not work, specifically the comic relief character. But it's a fabulous movie and a one of the best looking fullframe DVDs I have enjoyed next to maybe KILLER FISH out of Italy. Get it for like $8 from amazon.com, it's one of my favorites from 2005, a nice low profile release of a nifty, ghoulish little kind of film where the lead villain has an ALLIGATOR PIT where the unworthy are tossed to pay for their failures. YES!! Correction: STRANGLER OF BLACKMOOR CASTLE and of course KING KONG were my first Wallace films, but as evidenced by my forgetting about them entirely they have been a part of the pop culture I ascribe to for so long that I don't even think about them specifically as Edgar Wallace oriented productions. |

Oh I picked it up a few days after it was released and watched it the day it arrived. Beats the hell out of my taped off of AMC print with 4 minutes of commercials in the middle.

Quote: If it is DER MNCH MIT DER PEITSCHE, then there is indeed a most beautiful transfer of it in the Edgar Wallace Edition set. Have I mentioned I have all of those boxes? Haha! |

Another source for this Krimi (avail on Amazon) is Dark Skies Video. They list this title as part of a 3-title package.

I think there are two Edgar Wallace monk-with-whip movies, one in black-and-white and the later color one. Are either of them part of the available sets and do they have English options?

The two films are DER UNHEIMLICHE MNCH, which is in black and white and appears in EDGAR WALLACE EDITION 6, and DER MNCH MIT DER PEITSCHE, which is in color and appears in EDGAR WALLACE EDITION 7. Both of them have English audio and subtitles options.

Alfred Vohrer -- to my mind, the definitive director of the Edgar Wallace krimis (he made THE COLLEGE GIRL MURDERS) -- died twenty years ago today, at the age of 67. Heart failure.
I was interested to see a shot in Tim Burton's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY of Christopher Lee administering dental work to a patient -- photographed from inside the patient's mouth. Vohrer was the first to do a shot like that, in THE DEAD EYES OF LONDON. If The Joker made movies, they would look like the work of Alfred Vohrer. "I'm gettin' outta here, man! It's COLD! Blackwood Castle!" |

CGM, in my opinion, is a fun Krimi, though not nearly as atmospheric or entertaining as its black & white predecessor.

Parts of it felt like a spoof on James Bond, especially with that outrageous music score. I kind of liked it for reasons that I do not really understand.

I still haven't bought the German discs of this or SINISTER MONK. SINISTER seems more expensive than the other separate discs at Amazon.de while I can't find COLLEGE GIRL MURDERS outside of the set (I checked with the German title and they only list the used tape).
I'm halfway through the Dark Sky DVD and was wondering if its cropped or unmasked (its a 1.66:1 film). |

I'm thinking about picking this one up. Question about the FS transfer -- which was addressed in the previous post by ECC -- is it pan/scan, open-mat or something worse?
