Hopefully Sony have found elements of the full uncut version of Stranglers Of Bombay.
The UK 1996 VHS was missing several scenes of lurid sadism featuring buxom beauty Marie Devereaux. Two scenes spring to mind but there may be others. The first has Marie preside over the torture of Captain Lewis. While he is spreadeagled in the sun she pours water suggestively in front of him. The sexual connotations are very clear. The second scene is just as controversial. One of the cults new initiates strangles has own brother, whilst Marie, cleavage heaving, again watches over the proceedings. |

Thise two scenes sound familiar so I think they were in the French VHS. The UK tape was also cut to remove some animal violence that bugged the BBFC.
Over at the Classic board, Mike S ( who works for Sony I believe ) mentioned the first version the got ran short and that they asked for and got a longer version. |

I think I've seen the French VHS. It may be missing the scenes of Marie watching the thuggee stranglings.
These scenes are in an episode of The World Of Hammer TV series. However, the scene of her pouring water onto the ground is intact. Man, those breasts could sink a thousand ships....... |

The thing is, these are not superlative films by any means. They are average B-movies, but it will be wonderful to have them on DVD from original elements in, hopefully, correct aspect ratio.

Terence Fisher hit the nail on the head and came up with a great quote when he said, "No man ever looks at Marie Devereux once." Rumor has it that a young Michael Caine introduced her to photographer Harrison Marks, whose extensive exposure of Marie then led to her film roles. There's a sketchy stat page about her online with pics. Note that this page is NOT workplace friendly. (Also note that the bottom photo is an unretouched full frontal shot, rare for the period.)

There's been a bunch of online controversy, it seems, over the cover for the forthcoming set:

Whoa!!! That IS a cool cover! Beats the MGM cover image. How is it compared to the MGM release?

A beautiful transfer. Sony have done a wonderful job with Stranglers Of Bombay. The anamorphic picture is very impressive. Scenes that were otherwise cut
out because they were panned & scanned are now present in all their HD widescreen glory.

DVD Savant has some good info on this one.
http://www.dvdsavant.com/ The confusion still exists though. There is claim that these scenes were cut for the 90's UK VHS release, but to my knowledge that version lost footage from the cobra & mongoose dance. More likely is that they were in a pre relase print shown to critics and that the fim was cut back before general release. The missing shots also were in continental prints that played Europe, and as that Savant bit indicates, there is a complete version still around. Bottom line though is it bums me out a little bit...even though I had my hopes set low. The only film that recovers footage is BLOOD RIVER! |

Yes, it is a real shame that Stranglers is cut. I had my hopes high that this would be the definate version. It is a superb print though.
I used to own the 1996 UK pre-record and ALL the controversial reaction scenes featuring Marie Devereaux were cut. The Cobra & Mongoose footage may also have been cut as you suggest. Let's hope that a future UK release will be the full uncut version. |

Watched STRANGLERS tonight, and I cannot say enough good things about this that haven't been written everywhere already. It was better than I expected
though -- seems many have stated the script was poor but for what it was, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie! Looking forward to seeing TONGS with bits that were
edited out of the version I have (and lovely colors, no less!), and excited to see the pirate movies (and Michael Ripper!). This will certainly be one of the
best purchases of 2008, likely right along with the Hammer Horror coming soon...
