My first thought was a safety issue with the electricity. I quickly discarded that theory since every other film has the monster hooked up with smoke and sparks coming from the electrode connections.

Dummy in House of Frankenstein |

I know Glenn Strange carried a dummy of Karloff in the finale, but during the mad lab scene there was a dummy on the table. I had notice the monster looked different before and decided to get some screencaps today. Sure enough, that's not a person. Is there a reason a dummy was used instead of the actor?

Can you post the screencaps?
Is it a single shot, or a whole sequence. If it was a single shot, I would suspect that it might be a re-shoot (it takes several hours to apply the Frankenstein make-up), perhaps a camera didn't work properly during filming. |

It appears to be a single shot. It is a slow zoom of the monster getting the electricity. Some sparks appear around his lower belt region. That is not Glenn Strange's face, and the hands appear to be stiff and large.

Here's the dummy! (Screen caps courtesy Cushing.)
![]() ![]() Looking at the close-up, I think that's maybe Eddie Parker, who did stunt work for the films, or some other stunt man. But then again the hands do look unnaturally large, so maybe it is a dummy! Mirek |

Thanks for posting those for me Mirek. This internet sensitivity on government computers is driving me nuts. I think the face on WHATEVER it is, looks more like Eddie Parker. They could have, at least, had something, or someone, that looked more like Glenn Strange.

It looks like a dummy to me.

There is a rather large thread about the various Universal Frankensteins, over at the CHFB, that I believe addresses this "dummy." Someone over there posted some high-res picks of that head and face, and I believe it convincingly shows that this is indeed a dummy. It's been awhile since I looked at that section, but that's what I remember seeing and reading.

Yeah the hands kind of give it away definitely a dummy although I had never noticed before reading this thread.

looks more like Lugosi's Frankenstein than Glenn Strange. I've noticed this before but never figured it was a dummy. Thought it was a stunt man.

It's possible no one wanted to go through the time, effort and expense to put Glenn or his double in makeup if he was going to remain immobile throughout most of the film.

Given that it's REAL electricity jumping over the Monster, I'd think the right guess is that it was always intended as a dummy shot. Unlike the similar shots in SON OF F and GHSOT OF F where the "electricity" business is cheated with camera angles, there's really an electrical arc zapping on the body here.
The debate went on and on over at CHFB, but the gist of the consensus was 1) Eddie Parker isn't in this film-- or GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, of HOUSE OF DRACULA, or SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, as has been reported over and over through the years. He IS in FMTWM, but doubling Chaney as the Wolf Man in the fight; Gil Perkins doubles Lugosi as the Monster (and in the big CU in the ice.) 2) the mask & dummy in the shot above is the same as is seen in the scene in the ice cavern (the hands & fingers are in a similar stiff position) 3) The mask here appears to be the same as seen in a number of on-set gag publicity shots from ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, with Glenn Strange (in make-up) and Lenore Aubert with some little guy, either comic Bobby Barber or the film's director, Charlie Barton, wearing the mask, The details of the mask appear to be taken from a life mask casting of Lon Chaney's face. 4) Given that this mask makes its first screen appearance in 1944 in a film in which Chaney does not play the role, some of us theorize it probably predates the film, either back to GHOST (there's at least one doubled shot, with the Monster on the bridge over the Visaria street), or maybe even the initial pre-production period of FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, at the time when Chaney was expected to play both roles and would obviously need a double in some shots. Strange is not carrying a dummy in the finale of HOUSE, btw, it's a stuntman named Carey Loften (whose arm is in DUEL...!) I'm not sure torgaman's arguement holds up regarding Strange-- he spends most of the film laying down-- but other than this one dummy shot, he's in full make-up. |
