I enjoyed it immensely when it first aired back in 1970 on ABC-TV. It also aired a few months ago back on AMC which I taped. Was rather disappointed in the video quality of this film. Did they forego using the videotape master and go to a 16mm print instead? Whatever they did it was dark, grainy and looked like dull. Watchable but the clarity was gone. That being said I still think this is worth owning on dvd. Price gives a tour de force. My favorite is "The Cask". "Permit me to introduce myself.My name is Mabuse.Dr Mabuse".

There's been a bit of bitching online about it, too. Seems there's a video master tape that's in very good condition, but MGM decided to go for a "film-quality" look. Mirek

Based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Script by Kenneth Johnson. Score by Les Baxter. Produced by Samuel Arkoff, Kenneth Johnson and James Nicholson. Starring Vincent Price. A sort of GIVE EM HELL EDGAR as Vincent Price gives a one man show dramatizing four stories by Edgar Allan Poe...THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, THE CASK OF AMONTALADO, THE TELL TALE HEART and THE SPHINX. The success of this type of thing rests with the actor and, since we are talking about Vincent Price, it should not shock to learn that the film is excellent and highly satisfying. Johnson successfully adds verve to the procedings with clever use of closeups and lighting effects to keep things from becoming static---something that Vincent Price could also not be accused of as an actor in any case. The epilogue to the AIP POE series and the final highlight and return to quality after the dreary final previous efforts like CRY OF THE BANSHEE etc etc. Besides returning to previously touched upon material such as the first two stories, the film ends the series on a creative highnote by adapting the previous untapped HEART and THE SPHINX--a slight Poe tale that, for obvious reasons, had never been filmed before and likely will never be filmed again but, in this format, is perfect. A real treat for fans of Price, Poe and the AIP Price/Poe series. A very enjoyable evening it is too.

Posts: 2879 (07/11/07 12:47:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have this on the Midnite Movies Double Feature with THE TOMB OF LIGEIA and I can't believe I actually manage to watch both of them from start to finish without falling asleep, definitely my least favorite of MM DVDs featuring movies based on Poe stories.

I remember audio cassette taping this show many, many moons ago. I thought "Cask" was the best one too- I love the way Vinnie blasts out: "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, MONTRESSOR!!" it makes the quietly sinister reply: "Yes, for the love of god, fortunato." that much more effective. I have the audio book of Basil Rathbone reading Poe stories as well and his version is good too, but not like Price's!

Posts: 809 (07/13/08 19:00:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	i just watched the Tell-Tale Heart and it's gotta be Vinnie's finest hour (or 12 minutes) on a related note, the first time i tried acid was in the 9th grade. my buddy gave me a dose at like 7:45 am, and by 10:30 i was comin on strong in English class. it was Friday when we usually watched an English related movie or somesuch. this particular day we listened to a record of Vincent Price reading Cask. i don't remember if it was just Price or if someone else was in there, but it was a dramatic production, complete with sound effects. the hellish echos and the infernal dripping water bugged me the fudge out.
