BLOOD DRINKERS |
Lead | |
|
I just watched BLOOD DRINKERS for the first time a few days ago and was literally blown away with it's totally strange take on vampire films staring Ronald Remy (Dr. Lorca in MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND) as the strange Dr. Marco a bald-head vampire who is an evil S.O.B. but yet the film makes him somewhat sympathetic. Much of film plays like a dream sequence with the color screen changing to single colors to cover up the fact black white film was used because they apparently didnt have enough money to film it all in color very ingenious the way they pull this off. The film has lots creepy and strange imagery and one goofy vampire bat that kills the mood a bit but this is one of the most entertaining non-traditional vampire films around only the ending leaves me to ask why wasnt a sequel made?

Although not a real sequel, "Curse of the Vampires" (aka "Dugo ng Vampira", 1970) was made by the same director and re-united some of the cast members (Amelia Fuentes, Mary Walter, Paquito Salcedo), and some of the crew (Art Director Ben Otico, Music by Tito Arevalo), so it's probably of interest for you...
Incidentally, I think that the mixing of real color and tints was a conscious artistic decision, not a question of budget. Gerardo "Gerry" De Leon is considered as one of the importants Filipino movie directors and even had his complete filmography published in an old issue of the British magazine "The Monthly Film Bulletin". "Curse of the Vampire" has been released on DVD in the same collection. Both movies were successful and were released in European countries such as England, Italy, and Belgium. |

Quote:This is the film that was released on DVD as BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRES right? I just ordered this up based on watching the trailer on some of the Image DVDs looks like fun can't wait till it arrives. Quote:Well Koukol if someone told me BLOOD DRINKERS wasn't a great film I would have to agree with them as there is an element of bad cinema attached to it but it's just such a quirky and far different take on vampires that I really enjoy it kind of how I love Andy Warhol's BLOOD FOR DRACULA for just being so different and more importantly entertaining. |

Quote: Yes, it's the same movie. It was also released in GB under another title, "Creatures of Evil". However, as explained in my other thread, I repeated a mistake 40-year old, in writing that "Dugo ng Vampira" was the original Tagalog title. The real title is "Ibulong mo sa Hangin". "Dugo ng Vampira" is another 1969 Filipino vampire movie. |

I think I was hoping for these VAMPIRE films to be as wacky as the MAD DOCTOR films, which they weren't for me on first viewing. But who knows, I may have been in a bad mood or too tired when I watched them.

Koukol, these are some of my favorite vampire films. I think that lighting gels, atomosphere, are interesting, especially Remy, whom I feel is a excellent vampiric thingy, cum vampire.
CURSE OF THE VAMPIRE, and THE BLOOD DRINKERS, pique my interest far more than many of the western films. Best Randall |

And now, according to a friend from another forum who owns the VCD, "Dugo ng Vampira" (which is NOT Gerardo de Leon's "Curse of the Vampires / Blood of the Vampires / Creatures of Evil" as mentioned erroneously in countless sources) is another excellent Filipino vampire movie, made in 1969, directed by Emmanuel H. Borlaza. Another title to watch !!!
I've ordered the video, and I'll post about it as soon as possible. |

Re: BLOOD DRINKERS | ||
Quote: Exactly. They are much better! De Leon directed these two vampire movies by himself and they are entirely Philippine productions. The subsequent films with De Leon and Eddie Romero collaborating, or Eddie Romero directing by himself, were Philippine/American co-productions and are a different breed. I don't know if Romero was simply that poor a director but his involvement seems to have dragged everything down. |

Re: BLOOD DRINKERS | ||

I might have been a little too harsh on Romero, judging him from these movies. He was after all a director of note in the Philippines. His other movies, which I haven't seen, are quite possibly much better and he has referred to the Blood Island movies as "the worst things I ever did". I just found it odd that the titles he was involved in were so different than de Leon's vampire movies.
