some classic Bollywood "horror" that you can find |

None of these are true horror films - they're murder mystery/thriller films with "ghosts," but they are worth a shot. I stumbled across a web site wherein someone had compiled a list of Indian horror films (can't remember the site now, but there is another, more comprehensive list at: members.lycos.nl/doublefe...aphy.htm). Surprisingly, quite a few of the earlier films were readily available from Indian DVD specialists, in decent prints with English subtitles. Just Googgle the titles to locate sellers, maybe include the director name (get those from IMDB) for better results. I recommend the following (again, they're more like gothic thrillers than true horror films, but all are well done and very atmospheric):
Mahal (1949) Bees Saal Baad (195 Kohraa (1964, basically a remake of Rebecca) Woh Khua Thi? (1963, basically a remake of Vertigo) |

Thanks much, Brucifer, for the link.
The link doesn't work directly because the parenthesis is interfering. This should do the trick: members.lycos.nl/doublefe...graphy.htm Hopefully we'll see more explorations into Bollywood horror! Mirek |

BEES SAAL BAAD is a wonderful film... atmospheric and with a very 1930s Universal-like feel to it. The story, as I recall, has the hero moving into a mansion which is bordered by a forest which is rumored to be inhabited by the ghost of a woman who has already murdered a few people. The hero keeps hearing a strange voice singing to him trying to lure him into the forest.

Thanks for the info, MBarnum. Sounds of definite interest. And I'm sure there must be some nice songs in there, too.

Oh, yes, the songs are great!
I am so glad to have finally found a place to post about these Bollywood horrors...i have tried to bring the subject up on any number of other classic film boards...but no takers! I am just kind of surprised that there isn't more interst...and besides most Bollywood DVDs retail in the 99 cents to $9.99 range, with the average being around $5! (which is why I have more Bollywood DVDs, of all genres, in my collection then I will likely ever have time to watch in this lifetime!) And if you ever ever had an opportunity to see any of the Hindi mythologicals...wow! A bizarre cross between Cecil B. DeMille and Ed Wood with a little Busby Berkley thrown into the mix! What fun and a great way to learn about Hindi culture. |

I've been wanting to delve into the mythologicals, but have no idea where to start. Which ones would you recommend?

Two wonderful films that will give you a good introduction to the Hindi Mythologicals are:
Mahabharat (1965) starring Pradeep Kumar, Padmini, and Dara Singh. ![]() ......and 1961s SAMPOORNA RAMAYAN starring Mahipal and Anita Guha (although BHARAT MILAN made just a couple of years later has much of the same cast and the same story)...all are great fun, very colorful and lots of odd creatures and kooky special effects. ![]() oh, and to round out those two get SHREE GANESH (196?) starring Mahipal and Sahira. This story of Ganesh, the half elephant / half boy God is wild and lots of fun. ![]() Perhaps I will begin some separate threads for some of the other mythologicals and you can see what there is to choose from.....there are a lot...in fact you may eventually just find yourself browsing the mythological or religious or fantasy or devotional sections of the Bollywood DVD websites and just picking those that sound like fun from whatever decades you prefer you films from...there are plenty from the 70s and 80s to choose from and a couple from the 40s and 50s that are available now, as well. Then of course there are the Arabian Nights/Ali Baba/Tarzan/King Kong and other fantasy type Bollywood movies that will require whole other threads. |

Yes, thanks for the recommendations! I'm gonna hunt those down.
I'm also looking forward to your comments on those other films. I'm aware of the Bollywood King Kong, though I understand that it doesn't have much to do with King Kong as we know him. I've also seen the 1980 Ali Baba film with Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman, which kind of reminded me of one of the old Ray Harryhausen fantasy films, but with all of the stop-motion monsters edited out of it. A lot of fun nonetheless. |

Recently, I bought this old (1952) b&w Indian horror movie, HANABARI, directed by Premendra Mitra. It's spoken in Bengali, but unfortunately it's not subtitled. However, it was so rare that I couldn't resist !

Hey that sounds like a good one! I will have to search it out! There have been a few obscure ones I have found only on VCD without any subtitles, like some of the 1960s Bollywood Tarzan films, but fortunately they are pretty easy to follow regardless.
