I watched this routine and confusing Korean horror last night. Once again we have that old Asian staple of a vengeful female ghost and the curse associated with her death. As usual, this vengeance involves a number of grizzly deaths either at the hands of the by now tiresome device of a long-haired girl or via the bodily posession and psychic influence over a young student (who like the ghost thirty years before, is an outcast). Add to this mixture the standard superstitious and insular country yokels who are averse to outsiders, and, like the villagers in "Frankenstein," resort to mob violence and torches.
In its favour, however, the film is very well photographed (the colors are particularly vibrant) and the production values are impressive for a film of this sort. It is a beautiful film to look at, and there are moments of genuine creepiness that are very well done. The acting is also top-notch; however, the roles are so underwritten or the plot so confusingly elaborated that it is difficult to maintain much interest in the characters. In fact, my attention was definitely flagging in the last third of the film, largely due to my frustration at having lost the thread of the story. The director does succeed, however, in in creating a menacing atmosphere for much of the picture, abetted by some creative use of sound and color (i.e. in the hypnosis scenes, which reminded me of some American and British sci-fis). Untimately, however, this all adds up to a rather tiresome mixture, and even the over-the-top horrors (including one particularly horrific leering disfigured ghost) evoked in this particular viewer only a few stifled yawns. Worth seeing, I suppose, but in the mid to bottom tier among recent Asian horrors, IMO, despite the above average production values and acting.
