It's now the only way to get many of the
genre magazines.

Myself, I subscribe to 12 magazines and
I haven't been burned for over 15 years now.
For instance, I subscribed to at the time was
a relatively new pop music magazine called
TRACKS which was geared toward older,
adult music fans. Well before my subscription
was up the magazine went belly-up, but guess
what? Another new and BETTER music
magazine, PASTE, picked up all the lost
subscriptions for those people who paid for
TRACKS. And I am still getting PASTE. This
is very typical in the magazine subscription
world. Not all subsititute sub mags are trash!

My point is this. Subscriptions generally
cost from $12-15 per year (magazines such
as BLENDER or SPIN) to at most $35 or
more per year. I would venture to say
that even if the magazine folded and you
didn't get all the issues promised and
paid, that you received enough issues
to make the enterprise a break even point
if you paid full cover price. Small press
magazines cannot offer massive discounts
for subscriptions, but most mainstream
magazines offer 60%-70% off the cover
price. Generally speaking people are
foolish to pay full cover price when
subscriptions save money so much money!

When we formerly dealt with
nationwide distribution, we had to sell
for 60% off cover price, and shops
could return unsold copies for full
credit. Name any other business that
demands retailers accept returns for
full credit after the product has been
"used" and is returned in beat to hell
shape (for as long as two years!). No other business in the
world gets screwed like magazine
publishers. When you say you support
magazines by buying them off the
newsstand racks, yes, in a small way
you are supporting us. But 60% of your
hard-earned money goes to a corporate
entities and not the publisher, so you
hardly support us. I couldn't continue
to publish with that level of support. If
I were TIME or ENTERTAINMENT
WEEKLY, yes, but for small press
magazines, no.

MIDNIGHT MARQUEE has been
published since 1963 and we are
still going strong. The only way to get
our magazine is by subscription
(a few comic shops carry us), and
if you lost $20 here or $30 there over
the course of the last 30 years, I am
sorry. But buying a magazine is
like falling in love. It is certainly better
to have loved and lost than never to
have loved at all. Man, you don't know
the great zines you are missing because
the best ones are not always on the stands.

Too bad. We both lose. Too bad for both of us!
