Posts: 243 (08/28/07 12:33:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Here I am in duplicate: These are two of the more successful self-portrait shots I took today in my attempt to mimic Mario Bava's use of color gels. The humid and smoggy weather has been keeping me inside lately, so I've rigged up the cheapest strobe kit possible to keep my creativity from waning. I've been into photography for a long time, but have never seriously tried portrait photography. It's a lot of trial and error, mostly error. The photo on the left has a better exposure, but its shadows are too harsh. The photo on the right is underexposed, but is more natural looking. I like "the cat" in the corner. By the way, I smile and laugh a lot, it's just really difficult to not look like a maniac grinning in self-portraits.

Well, maybe it is, but, interestingly, I just recently took up the habit again myself. Here I have managed to capture my subject in a mood of wistful daydreaming in a hotel room just the other day.

Get a camera which can be remote-controlled, which is what I have used here. Then start relaxing, with your hand placed on the remote. As you drift off to sleep, at the precise moment of optimal relaxation the weight of your hand will activate the remote. Also, drugs may help.

The front element of the lens, including the barrel that holds the whole thing together, has broken off. The rest of the lens easily pulls on and off. Here's what it looks like: Playing with it, I noticed that if you hold the lens at just the right distance from the aperture blades the image focuses. The interesting thing is that without the front element, the lens produces a distorted wide angle with drastic focus fall-off on the periphery of the image. So what's the first photo I take with this precarious little toy? A self-portrait, of course. Besides producing a more striking composition, the titled angle was a necessity to keep the jammed-on lens from falling off!

Alas, it does not have a remote control, I think. The lens problem is promising. You might also consider putting the whole camera under water for a while, as discussed here.

Before I realized what was going on I found this material quite sinister. Now that I understand what is going on I have to admit I still find it quite sinister.

I find the more elaborate set-ups too artificial looking, but the more subtle photos are compelling. There's one of two "boys" standing in front of a shed that spurs my imagination---they seem to be hiding some dark secrets under the harsh midday sun.
