SO FAR WE HAVE: a] a slice off of the first 90 secs or so; the DVD starts immediately at the funeral scene b] choppy "DVD-R your cousin made" quality playback. Looks crappy, even compared to the Pagan transfer which is admittedly weak as well c] new electronically superimposed titles for parts of the opening credits; they made a good attempt to recapture the original "font", but didn't quite cut it d] different music here & there, or I am a monkey's uncle It IS widescreened ... and the audio is definitely mixed higher than Pagan's DVD, which is the only thing I have to compare it against. And Bobmonel can relax; I have one for him too. oh yeah -- the case's front cover was WARPED, I imagine by the heat from pressing the seal down. oops! So far I am giving it a B for the better sound. And this jerkyness of the DVD-R like playback really started to piss me off after a while. For my money it's the same print, but the movie isn't over yet so pardon me. OK they are in the car now.

I'm giving it a C because it's obviously a cheap ripoff print burnt to inferior DVD media. I am also confused by the cover art Alpha used [www.squonkamatic.net/cove..._orgy1.jpg] but like the art on those old GALAXY OF TERROR tapes by Embassy had anything to do with the flick. No extras, though they do have their catalogue accessed through the incredibly uninteresting root menu AND included a print copy as well. Even Diamond & Brentwood put music in their menus; this is just plain cheapness. Whatever; It's an inexpensive NTSC alternative to the Pagan DVD, which I am going to put in and time right now. If you have one of 'em you don't really need the other, though for $7 the completist won't be able to say no once they are holding the box in hand. cheers!! SQ

The color is shockingly richer, the transfer much smoother, no jerkiness due to inferior media/bad ROM etc, and the initial 73 seconds before the funeral is intact. [loud farting sound] Throw your eight bucks away on the Alpha disc if you like; I say it officially SUCKS.

The Alpha disc is BAD, plain and simple. Even for $5. My theory: they took the R2 PAL Pagan disc and did a poor PAL to NTSC conversion PLUS a poor MPEG 2 compression out of it. If you use a DVD as a master source for another DVD then you are basically compressing something that was already compressed. The result: ultra-compressed video and audio signals plagued with bad (VERY bad) PAL to NTSC artifacts. Translation: crap.

Posts: 2560 (07/21/03 12:24:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have an 81 m version which is letterboxed at 1.66:1 but does contain the nude scenes with Helga and Dianik Zurokowska and the original fonts. The print source was highly speckled and color faded, though. There is reportedly another, better, more complete transfer coming out from a new DVD company this fall.

That has to be a mistake. I can't imagine this film being that long, as it doesn't really feel cut the way it is now. I would imagine there are different versions with slightly different running times due to the "clothed" and "unclothed" usual reasons. But almost half an hour longer?

Posts: 2560 (07/22/03 14:45:34) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	OK, I just watched the Alpha DVD and can speculate as to why the opening scene is missing. I certain that this is cribbed from the PAGAN release and, of course, they had to cut out the JOSE FRADE PRODUCTIONS logo (Frade was the licensor) at the very beginning. They had to begin it at a new point with the video generated title in an attempt to "copyright" it as their own. That's why the main title is missing but the rest play out as usual in the green font. A crude but understandable strategy on Alpha's part. BUT, you lose a lot by missing the atmospheric precredit shots of the crumbling village amidst the lunar landscape. Klimovsky loves the stark beauty of Spain and really sets the tone for his Ur-Brigadoon (Thanks to RHS for that comparison), his fairy tale for adults set in a Balkanized Spain of the Gen. By covering their asses on the opening splash from Pagan's DVD they totally removed any pre-story context to the setting. This story could be happening in Albany, Tyrol or Timbuk Tu for all we know. That opening shot also emphasizes how isolated the town is & how alone they are against this mob of cannabalistic vampires. And speaking of context, it was only after assembling a VHS of my Klimovsky's in chronological order that I was struck by how DE-sexualized he makes Helga out for after she seduces the lunchmeat she tosses over the balcony. One of the sad aspects of modern day vampire movies to me is that vampires nowadays [unless they are in a Seduction Cinema release] all end up looking like rodents, with distended faces, pointy bat-ears and green wrinkled skin -- a far cry from Mirta Miller in her nightgown with that gorgeous olive toned flesh. But now that I consider it, methinks this is one of the first instances of a vampire depicted as a ravenous, hideous she-thing as opposed to a sex succubus I can think of. And of all actresses whom to de-sexualize, he took Helga "Walking Erection" Line and made her into a sneering, nasty looking "IT". Brilliant! Now, if only everyone else would stop doing so & put the girls back into their nightgowns and NO MORE BAT EARS, PLEASE.
