Hello, first post to this board so please be kind. I've been lurking for a month or so and you seem a very tolerant and knowledgeable bunch so here goes...
I've just finished watching KILLER BARBYS-what a strange experience. The title of the UK DVD was VAMPIRE KILLER BARBYS (although this only appeared on the cover of the DVD and on the disc itself) and is released by Screen Entertainment.
Perhaps it's the slight cold I have and the fact that I havn't had a lot of sleep over the past weekend but I found it one of the most surreal films I have experienced for a long time. For the first thirty minutes I was on the point of falling asleep so I switched the film off and got myself a coffee. Now more awake I couldn't quite believe what I was watching. It's either great art or inept filmmaking. The dubbing was atrocious (I'd love to hear the film in its original Spanish) but this seemed to add to the hypnotic quality of the story.
I loved the abbatoir scenes, the great statues and other disturbing objects, the fact that it was always striking midnight and the strange stilted dialogue. By far the best scene was the seduction and killing by the Condesa which I found both erotic and silly (the actress is obviously just stabbing the bed at some points).
I have only seen a few Franco films before (I think Eugenie is a small masterpiece) but this is obviously going to have to be rectified. Help...is this how it started for all of you and is there any hope that I can stop before It's Too Late?
