MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE - vers. by Gordon Hessler |

Received this today in the mail, of the Midnite Movies line. A little surprised by it. Has a couple of unexpected treats in it that I didn't even realize
before ordering it (that's another story...stupid Oldies.com) -- Lilli Palmer and Maria Perschy are both in the film!

I believe it's this film... There's a beautiful sequence in the park, with some lovely music and traveling camera work. An underappreciated film, to be
sure.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this film. Although I think that Jason Robards gives a bizarre, almost disinterested performance.

Welcome to the forums, Earl. Yes, Robards can be "out of it" on occasion. That mood worked very well in ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, however.

Thanks for the welcome, Mirek. I agree with you about ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Speaking of which (sorry to go off-topic), do you or anyone here know why
Jack Elam was dubbed? Lack of availability on his part, I assume?

Maybe his wonky eye started to talk and ruined the audio during the takes...

LOL
Fair enough. |

I don't know the answer (I thought that was his voice!), but I'd assume it'd be lack of availability.

You know I really don't like this version all that much as I had already forgotten I actually last watched this about a year ago as a back to back viewing with CRY OF THE BANSHEE movie which is the other half of the Midnite Movies Double Feature and I guess it was so forgettable that I completely forgot I watched it. I enjoy the 1932 Bela Lugosi version despite the silly close-ups of a real chimp that just doesn't fit with the other shots of a man in an ape suit but my favorite version of this Edgar Allan Poe story is PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE with Karl Malden and sadly this hasn't been issued on DVD in Region 1 yet but I may have to seek that pricey Region 2 disc.

Would love to see the Karl Malden film -- on my list of films to find. I really love the Lugosi movie, too -- one of my fave Lugosi films. This one, the
Hessler one, definitely feels like a 70s Euro horror film, and even felt like a Naschy film, honestly. Perhaps cuz it was filmed in Spain. Regardless, I think
Naschy should do a version of this story -- wouldn't that be something? Him as Dr. Mirakle or whatever, with a decidedly twisted Naschy/Euro influence?
Wow...

I agree that the Warner Bros. version is the best, and possibly the closest to the original story. It also sports wonderful 3-D photography.
