BLOODY REUNION |
Lead | |
|
Saw this one this weekend. Mrs Park, an ailing schoolteacher is encouraged by one of her former students - now her caregiver - to invite several of her
now-grown former students to her home for a reunion. It turns out that none of the students have pleasant memories of Mrs. Park (who gave birth to a deformed
child causing her husband to hang himself). One girl became obsessed with losing weight after Mrs. Park made fun of her in front of the other students for
breaking the scale, another guy was athletic until he tore a muscle in his knee when he fell during a race and Mrs. Park made him do squats for the rest of the
day, a poor student who could not afford a fancy gift for the teacher had her paper heart ridiculed in front of the others, the suspiciously quiet guy quit
school after being made fun of for soiling himself in class (his mother was hit by a car the same day). Presently, the delicate, wheelchair-bound Mrs. Park
seems so pleasant that the students' rehashing of the past and tormenting the old woman seems cruel. This alone would be enough to make a moving drama but
each time one of the former students lashes out at Mrs. Park, a figure in a bunny mask (the deformed son?) appears out of the shadows to torture and kill them
in manners that mimic the torture-porn aesthetics with enough taste not to linger visually on the acts. Told in flashback, the "twist" in this one
was surprising and the ending genuinely tragic. It helps that the film is feelingly acted by all the participants (with the most powerful performance coming
from Yeong-hie Seo as Mi-ja, the care-giving student) and the characters fully dimensional (you feel sorry for
even the most rotten characters and their pathetic fixation on rooting their failures in specific single past incidents with Mrs. Park).

In the first few minutes, I would've said no but then it gets progressively more engrossing.

I always look forward to knew releases from Tartan Asian Extreme and was eager to see this one too. Unfortunately I found the cover to be far more compelling
than the actual film. The whole affair seemed rather amateurish and cheaply shot. The gore is only so so and the acting bad. A rare mis-fire from Tartan.
