Lots of great movie ads. Hundreds of terrific movie ads, but... where are the movies ? the answer is simple: they are lost. Even a Filipino movie of the 1970s or 1980s (without even speaking of earlier decades) is lost, most of the time. Nobody in the Philippines took care of their movie heritage. And the young audiences don't care for "old" movies made... fifteen years earlier. Alas.

Registered User Posts: 1416 Jun 3 08 4:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have one of these tapes, a horror movie made in 1959 and composed (originallly) of four tales. Only three subsist on this tape, not only it has not been restored (in fact I think that a video master is all that remains of the original film), but it's full of scratches and other defects. And as you writes, Dr Ling, only a few of these movies are available, when thousands were made in the Philippines. Gerardo de Leon is considered as one of their "great" directors. How much of his movies are available now ? four ? five ? The only "old" Philipino movies I ever saw in satisfying quality were the American / Filipino copros. Of course, the preserved prints came from America. And they were not so old, "Terror Is a Man" is not older than Terence Fisher's "The Mummy". And much more "recent" than thousands of movies from America or Europe that we can get so easily on DVD, or watch on TV - including silents. And perfectly preserved. At least we can understand why almost all of the Cambodian movies made from the late 1950s to 1974 are no longer available. Or do they exist in some dusty archives and just remain unreleased? Talking about carelessness for a country's cinematic heritage, I know for sure that Burma had a big film industry until about 1968, including domestically made horror/ghost films. Films featuring supernatural content were banned by the government in 1968. Where are those films? Were they all destroyed by the government? Or just locked away somewhere? Unfortunately, I couldn't find out more so far except for the fact that the ban for domestically made Burmese ghost films seems to have loosened since 2005.

Registered User Posts: 1219 Jun 4 08 8:06 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hopefully some Filipino movies are squirreled away somewhere, possibly even in the USA where they may have been imported for "ethnic" theaters. The site I mention above which sells the video copies has some connection with a couple of old-time companies that are still around, and draws on their archives. As Todmichel mentions, this site claims the master copies are on U-matic video!! (in case you are too young to remember, this was a VERY old video format) Possibly they still have film prints but just use the video masters to make copies "on demand." It's too bad, because there seems to be a small but active group of fans in the Philippines and elsewhere interested in their cinematic heritage. Time to Waste Spare? Actually I ordered from Kabayancentral already and got a tape of "Dugo ng vampira" among some more recent films. Currently I'm creating a video box for it using original ad mat of the movie printed from internet sources. Another country that also lets its cinematic heritage rot away is Korea... Very sad, because the few older (horror) films that were released on DVD look very promising, and so do the titles for many, many other old horror films from Korea.

The entry for 1 November 2008 features ads for a number of Filipino fantasy films from the late 1940s up to 1954 (the final one is what appears to be a Filipino version of "The Phantom of the Opera," which--as with so many Filipino films--seems to be lost).
