Well, I just got back from seeing The Happening. I tried to not read any reviews, though some stuff did slip by, so I'd not have any preconcieved idea before seeing it. When The Village came out, I bought all the hype, and read the articles and watched the TV specials etc, and that really made me go in expecting to be blown away, and I wasn't. Though I still think The Village was OK, I can't go much more than that, and I never cared to get the DVD of it.
Shyamalan's best movie to me, is Signs. I saw this at the theatre, and I loved it, and knew this was a title I wanted on DVD. Rarely does this happen, when I see a movie at the theatre, the few times were with Kung Pow!, Team America, Land of the Dead(I was not really impressed with this one, but I got it being the collector, and having all the other Romero Dead films), and The Mist(I was very impressed with this one), and even the new King Kong(mainly too long) and War of the Worlds(I liked it).
Well, I did not feel this way after seeing The Happening. I don't want to give it away too much. But I think the big pro of this movie was the basic idea. It's a good idea, not really "new" or "original", but in a sense, possible. I like the idea behind it. The cons to me, is the sub story, or secondary "plot", which is rather lame, and involves the rather lame characters, though I do like Wahlberg, and I think he was OK. Some of the characters were just kinda goofy in a lame way. And some of the scenes were IMO downright stupid.
I also missed seeing Shyamalan make a cameo. He had many oppertunities, and it was cool to see him, when he did so, at least I thought so. Also, I think the commercial is misleading, though not unfactual I guess, when it says "his first "R" rated movie". Well, I guess it got an R, but it wasn't deserving of one, I don't think. It wasn't Friday the 13th, or Land of the Dead at all. And had zero nudity/sex, so to me, it was a PG13 at the most.
It seems in this movie, it tries to "shock" you, with bizzare scenes that are violent, but like I said, not too much, not a R, to me. But overall, I have to say it was OK. It wasn't bad, and it wasn't great, it did have a neat idea behind it, and it was OK. I guess I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10(being best).
