Stan Winston, 1946 - 2008 |
Lead | |

This year is turning out to be a major bummer. Stan Winston was one of my idols at any rate: I have always been just as fascinated by wondering how things were
done and time after time one looked at his creations and were completely convinced. He may have graduated into the big budget world of A list Hollywood films
but always kept in touch with his love of making things. And if you look over how many important films he contributed to it is not hyperbole to state that he
was as responsible as anybody else for the look of science fiction/horror as we know it today.

i usually wrote him off as over rated, but looking back over his filmography, he deserved at least half the hype he got. his work on the first Terminator and
Mansion Of The Doomed are my faves.

I remember him most from several horror film documentaries, in which he made appearances either talking about his craft or horror films in general. And,
unless my memory is wrong, he hosted some horror film specials, perhaps on AMC. Always seemed like "one of us."

Winston did host horror films on AMC for a while, I can't recall the name they used but he always focused on the effects in his segments and his love for
the genre was most evident. I was shocked how young he was....he looked 10-15 years older on those AMC broadcasts, which were close to 10 years ago.

Wow, that is a bummer. Like Squonk, he was one of the guys I really idolized as a kid. I think he, along with guys like Rick Baker and Rob Bottin, really
pushed the artistry of special-makeup FX and animatronics to it's limits. And while I have always considered Baker the absolute best of the bunch, Stan
Winston was certainly involved in some HUGE special-effect laden films (ALIENS, TERMINATOR 2, JURASSIC PARK, etc.) and deservedly won some Oscars for his work.
Another huge loss to the horror and science fiction film community.

The man died too young he had plenty more work left in him. My favorite work of his comes from some of his smallest budget films like the TV movie GARGOYLES and Frank Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD most of all the big box office films he worked on were nothing more than a dime a dozen crap-fest to me which I probably won't want to view a second time around.

Even did the suit for IRON MAN, which is one of the better superhero movies. He really had his hands in a lot of important stuff. Another blow for practical fx
in Hollywood movies.
And I agree with everyone who's had something to say about Stan Winston. He really did create a lot of important movie monsters over the last few decades. An incredible craftsman. He was a trailblazer, as is Rick Baker and Rob Bottin. The stuff Winston did changed the way fx are done. I mean, after Jurassic Park, look where movies went! The Terminator films, Aliens, all that stuff. Changed direction of big blockbuster movies. Shall be missed. RIP Ben |

LOL you're right Mirek, they did love getting him on those documentary specials, my favorite was that Alien Autopsy thing with Commander Riker from Fox.
Winston's conclusion was that if they could prove they were the ones responsible, whoever faked it would be hired on the spot to work on his effects team.

Breaks my heart! He was way too young. Loved The Monster Squad werewolf, Wrong Turn's inbreds and of course the Terminator. Real makeup effect artists like
him, Rick baker, Rob Bottin, and perhaps Kevin Yaeger, are few . With CGI these types of artists can only fade farther into the background I fear.

a few ROP classes on CGI to pad out their resumes.

Squonkamatic wrote: The people behind the ALIEN AUTOPSY special actually distorted Mr. Winston's comments. As I recall, the "I want them on my team" quote was based on Winston erronously thinking that the film (and the level of special effects) was actually from the 1940's. However, they edited out that part. He's quoted as saying it's a flat-out hoax here. It turns out that the guy who created the effects for the autopsy video used to work on DOCTOR WHO in the 80's. |
