Posts: 3416 (06/25/08 21:12:05) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None They are still stubbornly refusing to call it DOPPELGANGER but there is finally a new DVD pressing: http://www.amazon.com/Journey-Far-Side-Sun-Thinnes/dp/B0016B6ZJW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1214456751&sr=1-1 This is the movie ending with a cataclysmic space port crash that haunted me for thirty years after my dad switched off the TV before I could figure out what the name of it was. I was actually expecting it to be re-rated due to all of the persistent, gratuitous and really cool looking onscreen smoking in this one, but it's still a G and presumably they didn't cut all the cigarettes out. Good, freaky, downbeat, inappropriately somber & paranoid science fiction movie with some really polished Gerry Anderson / Derek Meddings model effects. GG on the cover art for a change, too. The movie's big moment of realization even takes place with a guy pointedly watching his cigarette smolder away while gazing into a mirror. I smoke but the movie is an extended form of advertisement for tobacco and alcohol consumption that just happens to feature sequences with space ships and guys wearing foil suits -- Most of the big discussion scenes take place over a little futuristic cocktail with somebody puffing a cigar or waving a cigarette around. It must have been sickening to go see this in a cinema and have usherettes walk the aisles selling fresh packs of cigarettes so you wouldn't even have to wander around looking for a machine to drop your $.45 cents into for some bold, rich, mellow flavor. Then you just kick back in your seat and light up with a handy ashtray there on the armrest. Maybe light one up for your wife too and ruffle your kid's hair as he watches both you and the characters onscreen smoke, drink alcohol, and then get blown up in a colossal Gerry Anderson explosion at the end complete with the obligatory Flying Steel Rod that careens towards the camera.

For your information the only name this film ever had in its U.S. release is Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun. So, Universal is correctly calling it by its correct U.S. title. There is nothing stubborn about it. Why would they release a film on DVD in the United States under a title which nobody here has ever heard of before? My DVD Profiler Collection

Whatever they re-titled it for US distribution is fine so don't mind me. My interest in film is trying to see the director's intentions, not a distributor's idea of a good way to market art like he's selling a box of Frosted Flakes. DOPPELGANGER is also more indicative of the film's main themes of perfect opposites: The journey itself to the far side of the sun is actually a very minor passage in the film's near 2 hour runtime.
