And for that matter, how do many of the UK dvds stack up against the US ones? I know all about the DRACULA-PoD dvds, and know that the Euro dvds of FRANK. & THE MONSTER FROM HELL, but what about the rest?

THE REPTILE - UK or US dvd? |
Lead | |

I don't have the AB dvd of THE REPTILE, but am thinking of getting the UK dvd as it seems more readily available. But, before I do, how does the UK dvd
stack up against the AB US dvd?

I happened to rent the AB a few weeks ago from the Flix of Net. The transfer exhibits some of the very worst compression artifacting I've seen. The U.K.
almost can't help but improve on it - especially if it's a newer rendering, even of the same exact master.

Really? I didn't notice the artifacting. Not that it's the best transfer ever done, but I didn't think it was bad. I just wanna make sure
before I jump in over my head.

When did you last take a look at it?

A few months ago. Rented it from the local videostore. I'll check it out tonight just to take a look again, though.

I've been on a Hammer kick lately, and while I didn't expect an early-gen authoring to compete with something like Universal's THE BRIDES OF DRACULA, THE REPTILE was noticeably poorer-looking than the companion ABs I rented like FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN and PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES. FRANKENSTEIN looked the most solid of those three. |

The Optimum UK disc is pretty dire too: The Reptile review.
Not sure if the German disc is much better. |

I have so many DVDS that I have actually never watched my disc of The Reptile. I tried to watch 3 different discs of Frankenstein Created Woman from AB, but
none of them worked - period. I finally tossed the last one in the trash and purchased the German release. Amazing...beautiful print. I have discovered that
the German releases tend to be beautiful - Blood and Black Lace, Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, Castle of the Walking Dead. I have yet get one I was
not impressed with. I am in the process of replacing my Hammer´s with the corresponding German release.

I just noticed this weird thing, and have to ask: What is the curious white liquid that is served before dinner at the Franklyn household and which is referred to as "wine"? |

Ed, are you sure you're not our dear departed Elsa in disguise...?

Ed is not Elsa because Ed knows how to use a message board. Do not invoke the departed--they may show up!

Comparisons between the AB dvd (top) and the Anolis dvd (bottom). Frames are not exact, unfortunately I'm not that quick on the draw with
VLC. Also of note, something weird I did not expect to happen between the NTSC and PAL dvds -- at least one screen cap I needed came minutes later in the
PAL dvd! Therefore, I'm going to be watching both versions this upcoming week to find what's different between them.

Many thanks for the screen caps, Ben. Unfortunately they look very dark on my monitor, but I'll check them on another one.

Now back to the central issue: What is that stuff they drink before dinner?

Wow! They look very dark on my monitor at my office too! Didn't look like that at home...
What is that stuff they drink before dinner? Carrot juice? Ben |

The board's white background is the main culprit, I think...
