One of the affections of this movie is that like Dracula's Great Love and Fangs of the Living Dead it was part of a syndication package of TV edits that local stations could rent back in the early to mid 80s for use in their late night creature feature spots for Friday or Saturday night doldrum hours. I specifically remember seeing it two or three times and being blown away by the scene where the doctor character follows Mircalla and the young bride to the desecrated church and witnesses their off-camera lesbovamp rites. So it was sort of ingrained in the memory and by the time we were first encountering it as a home rental option it was a pretty big deal. I copied the Gorgon tape onto a VHS with a bunch of other vampire films which I used to show to my pot smoking roommates and some jaggoff who used to come over and gruel bong hits from us STOLE it, most likely because this crew of numbnuts had never seen anything like it before and considered it borderline pornography. When I moved to NYC and started hanging out at Kim's Video back when they were cool they had fliers for VSOM & Sinister Cinema and along with Dracula's Great Love it was the first gray market bootleg I ever purchased. I still have the tape somewhere and was mighty chagrined when I was finally able to buy a used Gorgon original and found out that VSOM had simply duped it. Then when Anchor Bay pressed their DVD of it we got to see the movie uncut for the first time, making liars out of VSOM who had sold the Gorgon dupe as an uncut version. So yeah it might not be the most eventful Euro Horror sex and gore film ever made but most of us have a connection to it that dates back a couple of decades to when it was only one of a handful of such films that most of us had access to. It's only with the DVD revolution that it's become somewhat old hat & taken for granted, which is a shame because it's a very different take on Euro Horror.

It's not a soft, dreamy Sadean fantasy but a somewhat Sadistic take on aberrant female sexuality disrupting the traditional phallocentric power structure: The women are portrayed as a threat to the dominance of the husband and their own perverse interaction is highlighted by their taking of the young girl into their little web of indecency -- the viewer is encouraged to conclude that the women weren't just feeding on her blood, which contradicts the usual jailbait role she is suggested to be playing in the drama. One other interesting aspect of the film is that in my opinion it was a far more powerful first-view experience in that cut TV package form, because the viewer was inadvertently encouraged to fill in the blanks with their own polymorphously perverse "dark side" fantasy visions -- the film is actually somewhat more lurid & disturbing in that cut form just because you have to use your imagination in reconstructing what was censored out. I don't "enjoy" the movie but I have a lot of respect for it.
