Zombie on the big screen |

I was lucky enough to see Lucio Fulci's Zombie on the big screen here in Denver at the Starz center..... what a treat, eh? I'm just glad enough people
showed up to make it worth the theater's while.... encouraging behavior from society.

So how many people do you figure did show up, El Rey? The showings of euro-cult that I've been at have been poorly attended. And was this a midnight
showing?

I'd say there were about twenty five to thirty people.....you could tell most hadn't seen it before....hence the laughing at the dubbing and gasping at
the gore.
The starz does ten pm showings....almost gives one enough time to run across town to catch the midnight movie at the esquire if warrented. |

Well, I guess 25 to 30 people is better than 5!

I saw BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH at the Bava series in Cambridge, Mass a few years ago.
I felt the same way and doubt I'll pay for that experience again, unless somehow someone books a film I have never seen before. I have such a personal connection to these films that a medium to high level of audience ignorance is too much for me to endure. |

You mean, John, that they laughed at all the wrong places, right?
I've had this experience several times in revival type showings of euro-cult films. Discouraging. Mirek |

My memory of seeing Fulci's Zombie on the big screen was almost surreal. Imagine a small theater in downtown Provo, Utah actually showing the film on
it's first run back in 1980? Imagine the utter horror of all those mormons walking by the marquee and getting a glimpse of the poster with, "we are
going to eat you!" blaring out at them. The theater was empty when I saw it during an early evening showing. Didn't matter to me at all. I was just so
thrilled to get to see the flick as Fangoria really talked it up. I wasn't disappointed. The film ran less than a week and was gone. Life in the land of
the Saints.

that's why i hate watching eurohorror/eurotrash with random crowds. I take it personally when they laugh at the dubbing and performances.....but what am i
going to do, beat the crap out of hipsters with bad hair and buddy holly glasses?
actually, as a former pro fighter, yes, i should be doing that. |

I love Fulci's Zombie. I didn't see it at the theatre, but I do remember the commercials when it 1st came out, and I wanted to go so bad. This movie is
one of the 1st I got a dub of on VHS back in the day, along with Alien Contamination. Of course now I have the DVDs, Shriek Show's double disc of Zombie
and Blue Underground's Contamination. I also love Zombie Holocaust, I used to have the Dr Butcher MD VHS, and now have the proper DVD from Shriek Show, as
well as a discontinued German Dagon DVD. All these movies have Ian McCullough.

Funny, I have never noticed people making fun of these types of flicks in theaters. Maybe I am in the wrong town or right one I should say. The majority of my
theater viewing experiences with revials have been great. Probably the one exception was when they rereleased The Exorcist with the beefed up soundtrack, the
crab walk scene, and subliminal imagery. My wife and I, being the horrible parents we are, took the kids; who were probably 5,6, and 8 years old at the time to
see this and behind us were a row of mouthy, giggly, rude latinas destroying the experience with their comments and conversations amongst themselves. My wife
finally turned around and gave them a big dose of her famous Guadalajarian lack of patience and all in spanish. They ended up moving. Don't mess with my
wife. Una pistola caliente!

that's sad to hear. I wonder why these a-holes would even bother going if they don't really wish to enjoy the film? that's people for ya. always
got to screw things up for others.

it's the hipster mentality. they wear ZZ Top shirts because they don't like ZZ Top. they eat Spaghetti-O's because it's gross. they watch
Full House because it's stupid...and they go see 30 year old Italian movies at midnight on a wednesday because they want to make fun of them. it's
worth it to come home cranky and tired and have to talk your gramma into calling in to Taco Bell to have someone cover your 4-9 shift
i've mentioned it before, but i don't believe in guilty pleasures, and i don't think movies can be "so bad it's good." if you like something you like it, that's it. part of me wants to buy tickets to every Diablo Cody and Judd Apatow crapfest to harrass and heckle the hipsters on their own front, but i'd rather spend money on things i actually enjoy. |

I saw Zombie in the Midnight Theatre as a kid a few months after its initial Summer Run. I was in 5th grade at the time, and it was a big deal. The theatre was
packed, and I remember the people clapping along with the beat of the theme throughout. I think the show may have actually been sold out as well, because I
remember people sitting in the aisles because there was no where else to sit.
I also remeber seeing The Gates of Hell in Summer of 83', the weekend it came out. Saw back to back with Yellowbeard at the same theatre (they were showing Yellowbeard during the day, and evening showings of Gates of Hell). When I started 8th grade, I was the cool cat among the freaks, because I was the only one who had seen it, then when the Paragon Video came out, it was passed around school by one of the stufdents until it got confiscated as obscene material by one of the teachers. |

In the last 8 months, I've seen TENEBRE, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, THE BROOD, THE DEAD ZONE, CREEPSHOW, GATES OF HELL, and
PIECES on the big screen, in original 35mm prints, with young crowds of not less than 70 in attendance, with no serious distractions. A little giggling at a
particularly outlandish absurdity or egregiously-dated example of fashion, but overall attentive and taking their responsive cues from the movie in front of
them. MOTHER OF TEARS *should* be starting Friday!
Yes, I am quite fortunate. And yes, I am sorta kinda gloating about it!
