I discovered that I can see them on CBC channel 9 out of Windsor on Friday nights, so I've watched the last 4 weeks. I think they may be re-broadcasts, or perhaps behind the actual BBC broadcasts. They have been phenomenal, and I really like the new Doctor. He's got a certain quirkiness and charm to him that makes the show quite a bit of fun. The special effects and aliens are also nicely done. Looking forward to any episodes with Daleks in them! I need to get back to watching the classic episodes, many of which I've never seen. Brant

Special effects are excellent for a TV show and the scripts and acting are entertaining. It doesn't seem to have strayed too far from the past series, though admittedly I've jumped into season 4 of this newer series, so I'm not sure how much I have missed yet. All in all, a winner, considering I don't watch much broadcast TV either and it has managed to maintain my attention over the last few weeks. Brant

I am about to rewatch the entire series and have recently finished THE UNEARTHLY CHILD, THE DALEKS and THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION. However I will pause to try out the new ones sometime this Feb.................

What struck me right away is that the effects are definitely well done, but the show's creators seem to make sure and let the effects be sorta "cheesy" at the same time. I don't mean that in a derogative manner, but rather in a way that is respectful of the ways in which the older series were done. And I think the "new" Doctor is pretty good too. Registered User Posts: 6163 Dec 6 08 9:04 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched last night's episode "The Stolen Earth" and it was incredible. The first I've seen of the Daleks in this new series. The Daleks look amazing; they've been somewhat modernized in appearance, but are totally faithful to the original design. They are absolutely ruthless and evil as ever, and are just some of the coolest science fiction villains ever. Ex-ter-min-ate!!! The only thing a little confusing about this episode for me was all the supporting characters from this newer series, who I've never seen before, being very involved so heavily in the plot. I guess if I had watched the last 3 seasons prior to this one, I would have known who they all were and it may have been more meaningful. I must catch up! One complaint that I have about this newer series is that they don't seem to use the same serial approach of the original Doctor Who series. The most any story line has extended is 2 episodes. This is a minor complaint though, because there is still a lot of good in this series. I have to say that David Tennant may be my favorite Doctor so far (though to be fair, I really only know 4 of them). He's great, but unfortunately he's not continuing after this season. This is a real bummer, as his characterization of the Doctor has been a lot of fun. I still have the previous 2 seasons of him to enjoy yet, though. Having grown somewhat bored with a lot of the other stuff I've been watching, I have decided to do as elsa is doing and go back and watch every episode of Doctor Who from the beginning. I actually haven't seen very many before, so most of these are new to me. I remember seeing some of the John Pertwee and more of the Tom Baker episodes on PBS when I was a kid. I had never seen any William Hartnell episodes prior to my recent viewings. I really enjoy the William Hartnell Doctor. He's like this pompous and curmudgeonly genius who seems to always get his comrades into trouble. I'm up to the "Planet of Giants" episode, which is part of season 2. Every episode has been fantastic, and I was amazed at how much better the original version of "The Daleks" is compared to the Peter Cushing movie adaptation of the same serial. I anticipate that the "Dalek Invasion of Earth" serial will be much better than it's companion Peter Cushing film as well. Hartnell's characterization for the first Doctor is just better than Cushing's, in my opinion. It's kind of fun watching Hartnell fumble his lines, but recover, which unintentionally adds something to the character. Another aspect of these early Who episodes that I have enjoyed is the sets. While the special effects are somewhat primitive, some of the sets and dressings have been incredible for such an old, low budget TV show. I was really impressed with what they did in "The Aztecs" serial. The only set, so far, that seemed a little weak was the French dungeons in the "Reign of Terror" serial. You could just tell that all the brick walls were painted on and there was no 3-dimensional quality to them. Anyway, I'm really enjoying both the new and old Doctor Who! Brant

Registered User Posts: 3252 Dec 6 08 12:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Having been a Doctor Who fan sionce I was 9 years (Genesis of the Daleks was my first introduction), I have actively been following the New WHo Who since its US premiere on Sci-Fi Channel. What you saw with Stolenm Earth is nothing compared to Season 2 finally tthat featured both the Daleks and The Cybermen at war. I am also saddened by David Tennent leaving the show. He actually, by far my favorite Doctor behind Tom Baker and Patrick Troughton.

Registered User Posts: 1386 Dec 6 08 2:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ah yes the original DALEK serial......really a reworking of Well's THE TIME MACHINE is still quite excellent with some fine scares(the monster in the lake for example) mature philosophy(the whole pacifism vs war debate with the Thals) and the Daleks who are not quite into their shrieking phase yet and actually have some interesting conversations amongst themselves. Just WHAT is the Dalek system of govt? A dictatorship? A triad? A council??? "Why that is murder!" "No. Extermination." THE UNEARTHLY CHILD is very good as an introduction and THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION serves as a nice breather before the next adventure............. Hartnell is very good. Barabara and especially Ian are great companions. Susan is a tad odd. I often wonder if she is mentally ill. She seems go hysterical at the drop of a hat but then she is a teenage girl and I know how they can be.....................

Susan (Carol Anne Ford) does a little interview on one of the discs I have (I think the one which has recreations of the missing episodes of "Reign of Terror"). She stated that the reason she decided to leave the show was because they never gave her anything to do but run away and shriek in terror. She does get a little annoying at times with her hysterics, but I agree that Ian and Barbara are excellent companions for the Doctor. Brant

Registered User Posts: 6163 Dec 13 08 12:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched the final episode of season 4 last night and it wasn't as good as the first part last week. It seemed to take a "everything but the kitchen sink" approach and thus was kind of loud and all over the place. That being said, it still wasn't bad. From what I read, the CBC version which I saw last night was cut down to 44 minutes from the original 64 minutes as broadcast on the BBC. I have a feeling they must have cut out everything that wasn't action-oriented, because the episode was wall to wall explosions and such, so it seemed to be a bit lacking in areas. I was sad to see the Doctor's companion, Donna Noble, leave him (and all memories of her adventures wiped from her mind, due to being exposed to the knowledge of the Time Lords). They seemed like a good pairing, but I suppose it doesn't matter since David Tennant will no longer be playing the Doctor anyway. Brant

As I do recall though, you told said you had not seen season 1 or 2? There is alot of tie-ins from those first two seasons that one would need to know for a lot of it to make sense.

Yeah, I figure it will all make much more sense once I get a chance to see seasons 1, 2 and 3. Anyway the Troughton serial with the Ice Warriors and I have a few questions. The Ice Warriors---Martians really--are only called "Ice Warriors" because in their first appearance, they were found in ice and were warriors. Why were they still called Ice Warriors in their later appearances when they were no longer found in ice? Second. It is obvious that the Martian/ice warrior appearance is actually armor that they wear and they presumably have a true appearance that we have never actually seen yet.......however are their claw hands their ACTUAL hands or part of their battle gear??? Other than that, a nice little story with a pretty high body count.

In the first series it was The Bad Wolf, the second it was Torchwood, the third it was YANA and the forth was The Doctor Donna.

Ice Warriors are reptillian and green (get it? green men from Mars), and are cold blooded, hence able to�have survived the ice. My favorite Troughton episode�has got to be "Tomb of The Cybermen" though, which is considered an all time class up there with Pertwee's The Green Death" and Baker's "Genesis of the Daleks". I have been waiting for REVENGE OF THE CYBERMEN to come out on DVD and then I want to do a Cybermen festival watching all of their serials one after the other. I will say.........having just finished it that SEEDS OF DEATH was great fun!!! The Ice Warriors had a good invasion plot based on mankind's dependence on a single form of technology for transportation. And one of the characters..a Miss Kelly was a very interesting competent female character(rather like someone from THE AVENGERS) that feminist historians insist did not exist before they arrived but obviously did. The Ice Warriors also get to show their stuff. Slow and ponderous, they are still practically unstoppable and quite strong.
