And SCARY stuff when I was younger and saw those Cybermen breaking out of their tombs. Brrr. As for the new seasons...Christopher Eccleson was quite good, and I believe it's his Doctor that...well,, watch the whole series to date and you'll find out what happened to the Daleks, the Time Lords, and a lot of other races. What a mess. Tennant at first was quite hyper. Not Colin Baker, bless him, crazy, but very excited. He settled down and has really grown on me. Russell Davies, whom I swear has the spirit of JNT in him, has really taken the concept of The Doctor as hero and ridden very far with it. It works, despite a few bumps here and there, and Davies has a real flair for the epic, especially in each seasons finale. I'm going to miss him. Now, at first I had heard rumours of incoming producer/writer Stephen Moffatt, who has written some BRILLIANT WHO stories, wanting an older Doctor. Which I was looking forward to. I can see why they chose someone young, though the new one is REALLY young. But he's got some interesting mannerisms. Very much like a stage actor. This could work out very well. It's certainly going to be quite interetsing, once we see him, what, next Christmas I think. Speaking of restorations..check out the colour restoration job on the Pertwee story THE DAEMONS. Great job!

Registered User Posts: 1386 Mar 3 09 2:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Since I am bedridden with limitted access to a computer.........and that one only allows me to make "QUICK REPLY" rather than regular posts, I must therefore be brief. With little else to do, I have devoted my time to watching old TWILIGHT ZONE eps, STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION eps that I recorded off TV when the program was first on that I thought.....at the time.....did not suck, SPACE ABOVE AND BEYOND, a 50s doc series about the War against the Imperial Japanese Empire called CRUSADE IN THE PACIFIC, Some Czech porn(this was when I was in so much pain and flying on drugs that dialogue was not something I could follow) and.........the Christopher Eccleson season of the new DOCTOR WHO. I have only done the first two eps thus far and these are my impressions. The bad. It is very difficult at times to understand the dialogue...the bloody accents are that thick. Since when did the British forget how to speak? The show is VERY fast paced. Too much so at times. This is not like the old program which gave a story a chance to breath and develop. This is almost like DOCTOR WHO for people with poor attention spans. Because of this, the program is never scary or chilling the way it used to be. It is more BUCK ROGERS now than QUATERMASS or HAMMER. Billie Piper should have had her costumer designed fired. What is it with her pants?? Makes her look like a porker. I am surprised at just how campy the program is. Not complaining about it but you would think with all the fanboy shrieking about the 60s BATMAN program, this would not have been a route they chose. The direction is not terribly good. Very much like a Michael Bey movie. And Eccelson's Doctor takes warming up to. He reminds me of Huntz Hall. The Doctor as a goon. Strange choice that as well. I could do with out the Gay crap and religion potshots. It has no place in WHO. That is what STAR TREK is for. However it is mercifully brief. That said. The makers obviously have respect for the program and the character as well as real affection. My God. The Autons first ep out of the bat. They retained the original title theme and the Tardis sounds. I even see a sonic screwdriver. The production values are nice. The photography is quite lush. And it is a serious solid attempt to do the show. And I must say I never expected to see Britney Spears and Doctor Who meet!!! I have enjoyed each ep......and each ep has made look forward with excitment to the next ep. So yes. I like. Oh and the recreation of MARCO POLO was good too. Not too long to induce zen but short enough to enjoy. Pity it was destroyed.

Registered User Posts: 3255 Mar 3 09 4:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first season of the new Who, as good as it is with all its faults, actually is a disappointment in my opinion when you compare to seasons 2,3 and 4. The differnce being David Tennant replacing Chris E., who was much better and brought the character of the Doctor back toward Troughton/Baker years (and story writing as well). Tennant's Doctor is literally a cross between the two in personality, with a uniqueness thrown in to make the role all his. I was pretty saddened when I found out he was leaving the show, because he actually has been the best Doctor (in my opinion) since Tom Baker (where they all satrted going downhill, although Sylvestor McCoy certainly was a step up from Colin Baker that I could not help but like McCoy. But all lined up, David tennant truely has been the best since Baker. I also think Martha Jones amd Donna Noble have been the best companions since the Davison years (with the exception of Ace during McCoy, who was really nothing but a rewrite of Leela). The last two episodes of season 2,3 & 4 in my opinion, is worthey of the Who reputation. However, I must point out that with the new Who, you see the JNT influence woven in (JNT pretty much took the show into a differnt direction that was geared more toward children after Tom Baker) but I see with David Tennant, the writing seemed to be more faithful to Tom Baker and Patrick Troughton storylines. while trying to remain unique on its own. Bottom line is, Chris E. was the weakest the link at the ressurrection of this show, but the writing and David T. really helped get this back on track during season 2 and 3.

I guess for me Dr. Who will always be Tom Baker and even though I wasn't a big fan back in the day I did enjoy the rather cheesy feel to those late 70's and early 80's DR Who. Luis

The third Eccelson DOCTOR WHO story and I must retract what I wrote earlier about the show no longer being able to do horror. Even better, it was a take off on a Charles Dickens Christmas Ghost story. I liked it very much though AGAIN I think the pace is a little too quick. THIS story really needed to breath a bot more. And I am bloody tired of not being able to make out the dialogue. Does anyone know a single thing the Gelf said?? I had to run the last ten minutes twice to figure out exactly how the monsters were defeated. That said. Rose is turning out to be a very pleasing companion. I really like her. I am also very pleased at how the ep rejected modern PC. The usual deal is to have the characters constantly bemoan how rotten the past was....sexism, racism etc etc but not only does the show NOT do that but actually chides Rose for her future based snobbery. AMAZING. And very brave. Another interesting touch is that the Doctor's solution to the problem is only slightly less morally reprehensible than what the Gelf intend. Is it me or is Eccelson channeling Colin Baker's old ruthlessness and disdain towards human?? The story was also very moving on various levels. Over all? I like.

Registered User Posts: 6172 Mar 9 09 7:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One thing I've noticed about the new Doctor Who (at least this last season, which is all I've watched so far), that it is much more action-oriented and fast-paced than some of the past Who. It seems to be very much in step with modern movies and TV, really. I have yet to see any of the Christopher Eccelson episodes as I've still been trying to work my way forward from the original series (I'm still in the William Hartnell years). I haven't had as much time lately, so this is taking much longer than I anticipated. I may have to just take a break from the older stuff and watch all the newer eps first. Brant

Registered User Posts: 4457 Mar 9 09 1:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have no problems making out what's being said, but I can see where the Northern dialect might be a bit thick for others. The first season started out decent, but got much stronger as it went along. Eccleston plays a bit harder edged Doctor, and I'm thinking this is just after what happened with everything. In that context, a lot of what he does makes sense, even the Northern side of the country influence. A form of refuge, really. A lot of Davie's EASTENDERS days also influences the show, which I really hope starting with the next Doctor, stays away from London for a while and give us more alien worlds to play in. They have a healthy budget nowadays and some of the episodes have had production value that the original show could begin to dream of. I'd like to see that taken more advantage of.

I have the whole thing on vhs. I started with the DVD that had THE UNEARTHLY CHILD through EDGE OF DESTRUCTION and I had the recreation of MARCO POLO in the Hartnell/Troughton lost years set.......but then I would have to dig the rest from my collection.......something I am physically incapable of doing right now. So I decided to try out the Eccelsons and see if I liked what was being done. I did so I just ordered the next season. I will take it on a season by season basis. After I catch up, I still want to do my Cyberman run. I have to dig out the David Banks book on the Cybermen and decide whether I should bother doing them in Cyberman history continuity nor just watch them any old way. I do not mind the north accent WHAT I DO MIND is the lack of proper enouncation(sp). Speak clearly please. It is very annoying having to hit the rewind and then realize that you will never understand what was being said without subtitles. This is a very bad creative choice on the Brits part that can only limit their productions to their shores. Foolish. By the way Brant it IS a pity that your name is not Brent. Then I could say every now and then "Brent? You're Brent!!"

I have also noticed that every time we meet a race that wants to conguer the Earth, it is because of the Time War. I hope the series is not falling into the old trap that there is no evil just misunderstandings. AND if the aliens are hostile, it is because the Time Lords made them so......so it is really all the Doctor's fault. But we will see.

Registered User Posts: 4457 Mar 9 09 10:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I also HIGHLY recommend the Children In Need specials. these,a long with the Christmas specials, do keep the continuity going. There's a CIN special where the doctor meets one of his past incarnations and what's said is very touching. These should be on the DVD sets, but if not, they're easy to find to download. Also, Tenant's Doctor speaks in a Estuary dialect, and is easier on the ears. The series does get off Earth, but still seems quite obsessed about modern London. It gets better about this, though. And nooo. Certain races are absolutely evil. Period. One or two of which may be very familiar. A note. Watch out for little clues and easter eggs leading up to the seasons finale. Davies is a bit notorious for this.

Are the specials eps or in the extras sections??? You know I have watch millions of British programing. I understand cockney. I understand Australian. I understand Irish and Scottish but I swear there are lines of dialogue in the Eccelsons that might as well be in Swedish. For example the Gelf who chases Charles Dickens. It stops says something about atmosphere and goes into a gas lamp. What the hell did it say and why would a space alien speak with a Northern accent?? Everyone knows space aliens talk like Shakespean actors!!! Just like we know that in foreign countries, they do not REALLY speak in another languages but rather just speak English with accents. Unless they are 60s Godzilla movies then the Japanese have vaguely Brooklyn Jewish accents..especially the women. Yeesh.

Also, some episodes tie into others, which is different, as WHO has always had fairly self contained stories, with the Key To Time season being an exception.

Except for the flatulence business which I thought infantile beyond belief and degrading to the show and character, I must say that the program continues to impress. A very credible cliff hanger..........something I thought I would not see on the program due to its new format and UNIT!!! I thought it very interesting how the ep was basically an examination of what happens to a companion after they return from their travels with the Doctor.......without actually having Rose leave yet. I am also fascinated with how the program is revealing that The Doctor is becoming pretty much a known figure on Earth.......if only an urban legend at this point. It makes sense that if the Daleks and the Cybermen wouid be aware of him, Earth---which the Doctor practically lives on---should at this point as well. I have pretty much decided that unless something goes very wrong very quickly, this revival is a success. And more a text book example of how to DO a revival of a classic program. From the rape of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and FLASH GORDON to the film trainwrecks of everything from LOST IN SPACE to THE AVENGERS.....all of which fail because of a loathing and contempt for the material....THIS revival shows what heights can be reached by RESPECTING and HONORING the material. Not only has the program successfully revivaled the program but by continuing rather than rebooting it has shown how viable the program could be if simply handled correctly........which sadly was not the case from TRIAL OF A TIME LORD onward. I really look forward to each ep and have to discipline myself to watch only one a week. SUCCESS. And I see the next story after this serial is completed is called DALEK. Uh oh.

Not entirely true... Who tended to (and still does) running story lines underneath the episodes, tying them together to some extint. Jon Pertwee had the being trapped on Earth for his first three seasons and an entire season dealing with the Master, Baker not only had the Key to Time, but his entire first season where he abducts Harry Sullivan in the first story Robot, ends up on the Ark In Space thousands of years into the future, where they beam down to Earth at the end of the story and encounter the The Sontarin Experiment, then attempting to beam back aboard the Ark end of on Scaro to witness the Genesis of the Daleks, then use a time ring to escape back to the Ark, where they encounter a Cybermen invasion of the planet Voga, with tthe Ark being a major strategic point. Then lets not forget the last bBaker season, where the story overlapped into Peter Davison. The story Arc begins with getting trapped in e-space and trying to find a way out before the gateway between e-space and n-space completely collapses, then encountering the Master on Traken, leading to Baker's demise in Logopolis. Since the start of the show, there tended to be continious story arcs, sometimes it strongly tied stories together, others loosly.

This season reminds somewhat of Tom Baker's middle seasons(HORNS OF THE NIMON etc) in that the humor treads very carefully between excessive and just enough. Still a good ep with interesting insights into the ramifications of what traveling with the Doctor means and the very nasty world he inhabits. The entire hierarchy of UNIT was wiped out in this one. Second story of villains committing their crimes for money with two stories of them doing it because of the Time War. Gee doesn't anybody invade Earth just because they want to anymore?? I notice the graffitti BAD WOLF on the TARDIS. Hmmmmmmmmmm...
