Question about DVDs of EXORCISM/ DEMONIAC |
Lead | |
|
I'm hoping one of the experts here can tell me if there is anything special or unique (footage wise) about the Dutch Filmworks Extreme DVD of Franco's
EXORCISM (DEMONIAC on the cover). I have an opportunity to purchase this disc, but I don't want to bother if it is just like the U.S. EXORCISM DVD from
Synapse. Does anyone know what the differences are, if any?
Thanks for any help, Mark |

Good question. I checked DVD Rewind and got no help ( although they do cover 4 versions of the film there ).
I know the US Synapse relase was a unique edit prepared by Jess for that release - no idea whats on the Dutch Filmworks disc, but I'm betting someone around these parts does. |

According to dvdaf:
Dutch: Demoniac - 94 minute Producer's Version (Edited) I've heard this one has quite some print damage btw, maybe that's the reason it's not as complete. US: Restored 94 Minute Producer's Version |

DFW DVD runs 92 minutes 24 seconds PAL. It's obviously remastered version and doesn't have "quite some print damage" that I could see. Few
gory scenes are re-inserted from inferior version, like to one where Jess kills some woman(?) when she is sleeping.
DFW has released quite a few prints remastered by other companies. Mark of the Devil, Werewolf Shadow & Curse of the Devil all originate from Anchor Bay prints at least, so I wouldn't be surprised if Demoniac is the Synapse print. |

Is EXORCISM any good?
Who likes it and who hates it? |

I found it too be a tad boring despite the boobage. Not one of my faves from Franco.

I like it
Lina is in prime form and it's a rare lead role for Uncle Jess with lots of screen time and plenty of twisted moments. Not in my top 10 but it's easily in the top 25 %. It's also interesting as it has many variants, including the French hardcore version where Jess does the nasty himself. It was one of the first Franco's that had me seeking out the alternate releases, which is a staple behavior of most FoF ( fans of franco ). The Synapse dvd also has a Franco commentary!! |

I really enjoy this Franco film. Very sleazy and corrupt. Lina looks great in it and the subject matter is trashy and beautiful.

I like this one because it seems quite a personal film for Franco, rather like The Tenant was a personal film for Polanski.
When the director plays an unflattering lead part himself, there's something disturbing and unsettling about the performance, I think Franco, despite being the most liberal, anti-facist man in the world, actually put a lot of himself into this character, and addressed issues that might otherwise have remained bottled up if he had chosen another actor to play his lead.
'I don't think I make good films, just some that are more disgusting than others.' Jess Franco
