I'm very happy to be a part of this great forum. I thought this thread would be a fun way to get to know some fellow members. What is your pick for the most underrated Jess Franco film? Mine is REVENGE IN THE HOUSE OF USHER. I absolutely love this film. It was made in the 80's, but feels more like one of his 60's or 70's films. The cinematography is gorgeous, nearly every shot is a knockout. As a big fan of his early B&W gothics, I think he does a great job revisiting that style and atmosphere in color. I've only seen the French version on the Image DVD, but I'd be curious to see any other versions out there. Runner up would be DR. ORLOFF'S MONSTER. Great gothic horror film with a strangely poetic finale. I like this one more than THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF. Beautfiful B&W photography in this one. What is your pick?

It doesn't get any better than here in my opinion. If we are talking underrated Franco films I would have to go with the laid back Bahia blanca (White Bay) with Eva Leon and Lina Romay. Something about the laid back approach to the story and the tragic end suits me. I might also select Vampire Junction which gets throttled by most as total trash. I found it to be enchanting. Lina Romay is way past her prime here but I still found her to be quite sexy as the reporter in an old western town inhabited by vampires. This was the first time I saw Fata Morgana in a Franco film and she was far from fetching in her Alice Cooper makeup and cheap fangs. Now Snake Woman! Yeow. HombreLobo44

That's a difficult selection, as my favorite Franco films tend to be the ones that have a good reputation. I do know that I loved DR. WONG'S VIRTUAL HELL, which I thought had a very amusing performance by Franco (completely politically incorrect) and a good premise. So that would probably be my selection, as this film is hated by many. Mirek

This seems to be an almost universally panned film, but I find it to be engrossing and�wonderful. I can watch it over and over again. Howard Vernon is a green, moldy corpse and this film just shows how a master makes a movie for $5. Wonderful film with many wonderful scenes. I even don't mind the non-stop use of the zoom lens.� Love it! Brant

Mirek The opening scene of Dr. Wong's Virtual Hell, with speech bubbles, cool colors and strange pseudo-oriental synth music is one of my favorite scenes ever and I find it even more impressive than, say, the opening scene of Vampyros Lesbos. Killer Barbys Vs Dracula would be my first choice. One of Jess' best films. It seems to divide opinions, some love it while others hate it. I also like Franco's jungle adventure films, especially La esclava blanca.

One of these days I'll watch the Spanish version which is supposed to be even better. My favourite Franco film isn't so much underrated as unrated. The Castle of Fu Manchu. I'm not saying it's his best, which it obviously isn't but I love it. Tsai Chin, Rosalba Neri (see left), the strange mixture of Spain & Turkey blended into one fantastic setting. Francesco Cesari wrote a very good review of it at http://www.latarnia.com/castillofumanchu.html Don't mess with Ms Neri As well as Usher there are 2 other downbeat films, Broken Dolls and Dirty Game in Casablanca. The latter stars a world weary William Berger and shows what can be done on a next to nothing budget. It's a remake of a film which originally starred Mickey Rooney I think. I haven't seen that one but Franco's version is as atmospheric as hell. I've only seen it as a crummy VHS rip but that seems to add to its seedy charm. I love threads like this because it gives you motivation to seek out some more obscure films you may not have otherwise tried for (or ones you assumed to be complete crap). I am always fascinated at the wide and diverse range of opinions from fans regarding his films. And firirinabe, those screencaps are great!

Oh, thats interesting. I'd love to find a copy of the Spanish version somewhere. Even with the flashbacks, it's still a great film. I love DIABOLICAL DR. Z, one of my favorite Franco films (with possibly his best nightclub scequence?)

I never get sick of this film. The music is amazing, especially the trippy dream sequence with the two young people and the leading lady. Great guitar mixed with some cool sounds. Also, I have to agree that Dracula Contra Frankenstein should have more respect. It's a fun film to say the least. It always reminds me of making home movies with a camcorder when I was a kid. I also enjoy Franco's shot on video stuff from the late 90's to the turn of the decade. The only Franco film that I've never liked is Oasis of the Zombies. It puts me to sleep within the first 5 to 10 minutes. I've only watched it twice all the way through.

Virgin is my favorite Franco and one of my top ten favorite films period as far as underrated, i stick up for Devil Hunter quite a bit. it's got such a great pulpy vibe, a corny monster, some cheap gore and lots of boobs.
