Registered User Posts: 7 Aug 2 09 8:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Two questions: 1) I am writing a piece on how the krimi (amongst other types of horror and thriller films) helped shape the slasher subgenre. I have already seen a number of krimi that fit the bodycount vibe and have several slasher aspects (POV, dead body every fifteen minutes, whodunit etc), such as The Stangler of Blackmoor castle, Room 13, Dead Eyes of London, The Excutioners, and, especially, Phantom of Soho. Any others that particularly spring to mind? 2) Also, I'm sure I read somewhere that the audience for krimis in Germany was predominantly teenage. Is that right? Thanks in advance!

It leans heavily on the "old dark house" motif but does have slasher elements to it. "The world's going to change tonight, doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... happy Halloween."

I dare say that many of the more violent elements of some krimi were inspired by PSYCHO; not to mention the old dark house genre from the 1920s and 1930s. Even by the earliest late 50s krimi, the genre was almost parodying itself. With a film such as THE GREEN ARCHER almost doing a SCREAM more than 30 years before that film (referring to the opening where a character declares the film cannot start until there's been a murder!). I wonder how audiences at the time took them? Whether they say them as slightly campy even back then. I suspect they did! ... That adds another question. Did Wallace write krimi with a humorous element, or did the films add that I wonder?

While I haven't read all of his books I have to say that the humorous elements were shoehorned into the movies and didn't come from Wallace. Maybe they felt the subject matter was rather grim and needed some levity to help the viewers through it. "The world's going to change tonight, doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... happy Halloween."

I have read several times that the German krimi was an inspiration for the Italian giallo, but I have never been able to find out why. Can anyone elaborate? Was it the sometimes labyrintical plots of the krimis, the violent murders, or something else? I know the krimis were very popular through much of Europe at the time. Any suggestions of titles were you can get a feeling of this kinship?

Registered User Posts: 2954 Aug 16 09 7:10 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Bava's Blood and Black Lace (1964) is considered by many as a very influential early giallo. It was an Italian-French-German co-production and personally I feel it's strongly influenced by the German krimi films. The typical "black gloved killer" look in the giallo also seems to have been popular in the earlier krimi's btw. The Embalmer (1966) is also worth checking out as it seems to be strongly influenced by the krimi as well. It's generally considered a gothic/giallo crossover. Last Edited By: bdc Aug 17 09 6:15 AM.
