Mobius directed me towards this new interview. http://www.avclub.com/articles/jess-franco,34595/

Having read the interview in full now, he seems to have an interesting perspective on his work and a very successful attitude towards life. And while the
interviewer is clearly no Franco expert, he does ask reasonable questions that deliver some nice responses.

As always, Franco cites John Ford as his favorite director.
I've never really looked at Ford's work, is it relevant to Franco scholars, I mean, is there a direct influence? I know he made a lot of classic westerns with upright moralistic characters, which seems to be as far away as you get from Franco's universe. I guess it must be a stylistic influence?

" Ford is one of the great pioneer studio directors. Franco likely grew up watching his movies. However their asthetics are far apart. One might find connections with THH QUIET MAN (as a mood piece), GIDION OF SCOTLAND YARD (a police mystery), DONNAVAN'S REEF (a lark), THE INFORMER (symbolisim and a silent movies masqerading as a talkie). One movie ( I can't recall the name) in particular could be an influence OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES, visually anyways. A lost patrol from WWI is stranded in the Mesopatamia Desert. It features Boris Karloff as a nutjob who has God Fever. |

I would guess that picture of Jess was taken in the early 80s.

I'm glad you like the interview! You know, the key is have him talking in Spanish, he can express himself freely and deeply. Sometimes when he talks
English or French in other interviews you realize he can't say exactly what he wants, and lots of things are lost in translation. Otherwise he is always a
great character to interview.
